We have a little shed in our backyard that we actually get a lot of use out of– but it’s looking a little sad and we started talking about replacing or fixing it up this past weekend while working out in the yard. So I took a deep dive onto Pinterest for ideas… and the examples of what people have done to their “sheds” and garden buildings had me squealing. There is something SO charming about a well designed shed….
I can’t deal with the cuteness of this Dutch door situation!
Quite the potting shed :)
A smaller, darling option if you can do the glass-heavy look:
Of course Joanna Gaines has an amazing one…
I’d love to spend an afternoon here!
AH! DEAD! That ROOF!
White washed brick always leaves me weak in the knees.
Walpole Woodworkers is a source that I know of that makes really amazing exterior elements for home and garden (trellis kits, custom fencing, etc) and also does THE BEST sheds. Here are just a few I’m obsessing over:
At the same time, I came upon this INCREDIBLE playhouse that architect Patrick Ahearn did and it made me want a playhouse for Henry SO BAD (also, I love all things tiny so it’s also a little bit for me too). But I can’t have BOTH a shed and playhouse on my small lot. It would look ridiculous and take up way too much space.
SoI started thinking, why not figure out to combine BOTH into one structure? I’m thinking we could use the bottom left Walpole shed from above (white with black doors) in place of our current gross shed, but trick out the inside so that a portion of it acts as a playhouse for Henry, and the rest is storage for garden stuff and Henry’s huge PowerWheels! Here’s a little sketch- the front door (a dutch door, of course) would access the playhouse and the larger side doors would be access for the shed. Down the road when Henry is older, we (or future owners) could just remove the middle wall to make it ALL shed.
Also, Jenny Komenda did an adorable playhouse that could be inspiration for our shed/ playhouse. See more of it here.
We’ll see if I actually pull the trigger on this- but it would be SO fun to do!!! I love thinking about it at least!
Here are some more sheds and garden structures that have caught me eye in my obsessive research….

Yes! Please! (I love spending other people’s money! Lol.) And yes…combine the playhouse/shed with a round boat window between the two so H can watch the happenings next door. I’m living vicariously, b/c I’m still awaiting a cute shed on my property that never seems to make it into the top 20 things that must be tackled/paid for/accomplished. :-)
You would like my shed. It is Williamsburg outhouse meets Walpole woodworkers…
I have done this whole search and came up with some of the same images. My brother’s firm ended up building it for me – complete with hip roof and huge finial on top. It is a working shed but has some fun things in it. like a zinc countertop and a painted floor…
(It DOESN’T have a power wheels though….) Email me if you want some images.
Really – I spend months designing it.
Love the shed/playhouse idea but I would divide it with a temporary wall or canvas drape (drop cloth). You’ll want that storage space back as soon you start filling up your side or in the winter when he isn’t going out there but you need to put the summer deck stuff away.
Whahhhh my village would have me tear this d own in 1 day or make me get extensive architectural plans and surveys approved by the architectural review board to ever get away with it.
“Today’s” version of a “folly!” Mine started out the top of our swing set…a “fort.” It was cite enough we “savef” it &now in our back yard all “tricked out” and my, “sheshod” (shed.) franki
Ha these sheds are the size of a London flat!
Ugh meanwhile my husband is still building a “shed in a box” form Costco he started last fall… These are GORGEOUS! All great ideas!
Do you follow Young House Love? They built adorable (and functional!) sheds at their beach house and rental property!
Sigh. Love them all. And love your idea of combining playhouse/storage shed together because Henry will outgrow playhouses in a minute or two. Now I always wanted a tree house but no big trees in our yard. But a playhouse would have substituted nicely in my childhood.
She sheds are a whole “thing” on pinterest. In my dreams
We had an AMAZING playhouse shed growing up. It was magical. Even better because it was two stories. The front was split between the (front) playhouse and (back) shed and then there was a magical stairway that opened up into a giant loft. My mom decked it out with built ins and cupboards and Marvin windows. We were in that thing WELL into our teens.
Have you heard about She Sheds? It’s the female equivalent to a man cave.
I could see some rose sipping in some of those fabulous sheds 😂
Yes! I’ve been eye-balling some small but adorable greenhouses that you can buy from Wayfair. Not sure how soon it’ll be in my future, but goals… :) .
You should also look at Gardensheds.com. Their designs are classically inspired and beyond gorgeous!
I love these so much! I was reading your post like we are having an actual conversation and I was going to ask you would you really use the whole shed for storage? It’s just too cute to look that way on the outside.
In my next life, I will have a shed that is like a mancave (BTW: why don’t we have women caves?) where I can decorate it in feminine colors, not worry about spills, have a minute to collect my thoughts and maybe binge watch some reality or the next season of the Crown.
This will be a fun project to watch you update. Thanks for sharing!
You must have missed the stupid “she shed” craze…The whole HOUSE is MY she shed, baby!
