That was the cheesiest title, no? I couldn’t help myself.
Black and white in any combination with always be classic- and that stands doubly true for exterior and patio decor! I love a good black and white patio scheme- it’s so crisp and classic and gives you perfect base to add a pop of color or just let your greenery and scenery be the vibrant focus of the space. My favorite places to shop for outdoor decor are Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, CB2, Crate & Barrel, World Market, Williams Sonoma Home, Target, Homegoods, Ballard, Frontgate and Terrain.
My few tips on outdoor decorating:
- Always make sure you are using the right materials in the right spots- not all furniture deemed for “outdoor use” can withstand the elements- many labeled as such are for covered patio use only. A good example are many of the bistro style chairs we all love- the woven seats can take just about anything, but if the frame is made of real rattan or bamboo they can’t be left out in the rain and snow.
- To really be safe and maintain the quality of any patio furniture invest in a set of covers!
- Avoid buying everything in sets- sure, having a matching sofa and chairs can look great, but don’t buy the coffee table and side tables too. Mix up styles, finishes (woven wicker with sleek metal for example) and vendors for a unique look.

I love how elegant and timeless these look, but I have to say lounging on a black cushion might get too hot fast!
I agree- the black chaise cushions I think are not the best idea. :)
I love those stripes, whether black and white or dark blue and white. They seem quintessentially French.
Want or need? Okay, both!
Classic. Fresh and timeless. Plus, patio greenery looks stunning against black and white. I’m amazed at how far the outdoor performance fabrics have come along. I bit the bullet 2 seasons ago and had some custom cushions made – Sunbrella fabric choice(and white piping) and it’s held up beyond expectations
Good post and photos!

So timeless and elegant, I love them all! Especially the black frame with white cushions, to avoid overheating like a previous comment noted.
I have always wanted a black and white outdoor patio look! Paired with green plants and succulents I think it’s the chicest look! Someday…

Love! Our back patio furniture desperately needs replacing, but I am waiting until late summer, when everything goes on sale.
Love this post!! I have had the black/white color scheme outside since 2011. I love it for the very reasons you have stated. It’s a timeless classic that’s easy to work with and always looks good!
Thanks Erin for continuing to provide such inspiring material. Love your Instagram! What a little prince you all have been gifted.
I am obsessed with all of your picks! I am about to move and our new house has a great back deck– thanks for inspiring me as I furnish our new space!
Cheers!

Erin you are preaching to the choir. My outdoor furniture is based in black and white and I added a pop of bright cobalt blue with it. Nothing like it in a good stripe, as you said, CLASSIC!!! I have two striped umbrellas and I love them with my furniture. This post was like eye candy to me!! Thank you!!
Black and white is an awesome choice! (and your title made me giggle!) I recently purchased a gunmetal lounge set with white cushions for my backyard. I was surprised at how well the modern take on patio furniture blended with the foliage. What a classy look!
If you’re going to white cushions (or black and white striped), make sure you use an outdoor fabric protectant. Sunbrella fabric is durable, but it will help with fading and stains. And yes to outdoor furniture covers. They are a pain to take on and off, but really extend the life of your outdoor furniture.
