Sponsor Welcome: Shades of Light

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

It is such a thrill for me when I store I have been shopping at my whole design career asks to be a sponsor of this blog. I’ve come so far with this little project (now big project) and having Shades of Light as a sponsor just solidifies that.  As I posted before, they are such a wonderful source for mid-priced (with some high end and very affordable items too)lighting, rugs and accessories.  Here are some more of my absolute MUST haves:

I am freaking out over these suzani backed Louis style chairs! Pop one in an entryway or a couple next to a cafe table in a kitchen or sunroom and people will be so jealous. One of them being me.

I adore these flatweave striped rugs. Sometimes it can be challenging to find an affordable flat weave made of non-outdoor fabric. These are casual but modern and I am pretty sure I’ll be ordering the black one.

Did you know SOL has vintage stuff? oh, they do- including rugs like I was talking about in yesterday’s post! This one in pinks and golds is my idea of heaven!  Paired with this vintage Empire style chandelier I’d be one happy little lady.

Exclusive to SOL are these awesome natural basket chandeliers- do they not scream “BEACH HOUSE”??? That turquoise one is what dreams are made of because it won’t cost you a small fortune.

Again- things I need to have – a pair of those rock crystal lamps next to my bed!!!! OMG, I can barely stand it! And the gooseneck cream lamp at right ain’t nothin’ to turn your nose up at- so classic and elegant but with it’s little lucite base totally hip!

A gorgeous brass swing arm lamp that would perfection next to a bed and this grate sconce that would be fabulous going down a long hallway!

If I ever get to design my own kitchen  think I might have to have three of these brass babies above the window in front of my sink (because that’s what will go down).  And in a small powder room or closet, this lotus ceiling light!

One of my favorite mirror styles of all time- in white and brown leather. A slight not to equestrian style but not in an obvious way.

Be sure to bookmark them as a great source and check out their blog, Inspired Spaces.

Fantastic Fitting Rooms

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

My mom sent me this interesting article from WSJ on how some stores are spending some bucks to upgrade their fitting rooms in hopes that it will spur more sales. Well…..DUH.  There is nothing worse than having a handful of purchases you are psyched to try on and get into a dirty, dingy, poorly lit fitting room with an annoying attendant who constantly knocks and asks if you need anything. *Side note- recently at one very high end department store I had a sales girl stand outside my room and talk on her phone to her friend about how LONG I was taking in there. Cue “Bitchy Erin”, in which I stopped trying stuff on, opened the door and said “so sorry to be keeping you” and thrust my goods into her hands. LOST SALE. But I digress….

Give me lighting that makes me look J-Lo glowy. Give me a slightly skinny mirror (but not so skinny that when I get home and look in a regular mirror I gasp in horror at the reality). Give me a place to put my purse and sit down to put on shoes. Give me enough space to move around and finagle my way into snug jeans without smashing limbs on the walls. But above all, give me LOTS OF PLACES TO HANG STUFF! It baffles me as a designer when I get in a fitting room and there is one lousy hook to put 10 pairs of pants on. Huh? Am I being filmed for some scientific study on how humans function without proper tools?

Ann Taylor has revamped not only their look, but their fitting rooms as well. Love the ottomans and the chandelier.

Have always loved Anthro’s rooms (although small)- the mismatched doors are super cute.

I am that annoying person that strips down to tank top in the middle of the store to just pop stuff on in order to avoid fitting rooms.  Bloomie’s added these cool little pods for that reason! YAY!

And so did Old Navy (the #1 place for the “in aisle try on”). Brills.

But why not make these spaces like little jewel boxes and add some real wallpaper inside like they did at Lilly Puliter and Trink Turk?

Someday I’ll have a store, and when I do the fitting rooms would be hooked up like THIS:

Nina Campbell Wallpaper mixed with zebra carpeting, an Oly studio leather bench, decorative mirror, vintage sputnik light fixture and lucite hanging rods (done in brass, not chrome as shown). And the best part? The Maya Romanoff Bedazzled glass bead wallpaper on the ceiling to reflect dazzling light!

Properly Vetted

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

I am totally bananas for the renovated Atlanta home that will soon house a new womens clothing boutique called Vetted come October.  Forget McMansions and huge sprawling estates, all I want in life is a teeny little house that looks like this! Seriously! I’d do dark wood floors personally, but I am just mad for the amazing glamorous styling job these people did- the black exterior with white trim and yellow door, the whitewashed interior with black trim and white chandeliers! Yes, please. On my next visit to Hotlanta to see my brother I’m going to be sure to stop in and see it in person (and maybe pick up something from Thread Social, Myne, Geren Ford or any of their other lines).
