The Travel Bug Bites.

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

It’s been a hot, hazy summer here in Boston.  The kind of heat that makes you really cranky and not want to do anything but slump on your sofa in the A/C and watch The Hangover for the 50th time because you don’t have the energy to argue with your husband to change the channel. In short, it’s been miserable and it’s been making me dream of where I can go on a jet plane to escape. Granted, a lot of the places I want to go are hot right now too, but it somehow seems more bearable in a  foreign country than in my hometown.  So when I saw the posts from my girls Erika and Paloma about their respective trips to Italy and Barcelona I began plotting and dreaming of where I want to go. Since I’ve already been to Italy (a magnificent 2 week trip in high school with a group of my fave girls and one awesome chaperone- Mrs. Delana, for those MPSers reading) I think Barcelona might be on the schedule for spring 2011.  But what a  tough choice…

Erika posted pictures from her visit to the J.K. Place in Florence and I about died.  Florence was my favorite Italian city and this hotel looks like absolute perfection!  You can take such inspiration for your own home from these rooms!

And just when you are thinking “Yup, that place is perfection” I’m gonna go ahead and blow your mind with the J.K. Capri. I mean, REALLY. REALLY. I can’t even deal with this level of awesomeness.

I can’t explain why my text is now it italics. I can’t fix it so you’re gonna have to deal. :) Anywhoo, Paloma was next in posting pics from her trip to Barcelona and I am now 100% certain I will be staying where she stayed which was the Hotel Pulitzer designed by Lázaro Rosa Violán.

The Sound of Jaws Dropping…

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

I haven’t been this inspired by a home and a couple in a long time. We’re talking MAJOR lifestyle (and plain ol’ STYLE) lust here. I am nearly speechless in awe of the pure, unadulterated awesomeness of sculptor/ furniture designer Fitzhugh Karol and jewelry designer Lindsey Caleo’s Brooklyn brownstone.  In addition to their individual work they also are part of the family run business The Brooklyn Home Co. which specializes in renovating, you got it, Brooklyn brownstones. Their own project is the crown jewel though.  The bright white space combines natural wood, metal, glass and modern and traditional furniture and accessories in such a  clean but not boring way that I am going to use this space as PERFECT inspiration for my own new home. I am ENAMORED to say the least. I’m surprised that with two such massive talents residing in one space (and in a relationship) that it hasn’t ripped a hole in the space time continuum. Their coolness seems superhuman. Enough of my pontificating….feat your eyes on this….

Bright Sunshiney Day

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

I’ve got two trips planned to warmer climates this winter/spring- Los Angeles in February and Florida in March.  But after seeing this spread in Coastal Living of designer Meg Braff’s reinvention of a villa at Round Hill in Jamaica, I wouldn’t mind adding that to my itinerary as well. This first picture of the blue bedroom made me weak in the knees when I saw it. Actually, I said TO the magazine itself, “Oh my goodness, you are SPECTACULAR!”

Crazy? Check.

How could you not be happy with this pink umbrella over top?

What would I wear to such a vacation spot, you ask? Why none other than the Morocco-meets-Palm Beach designs of Jules Reid! A former interior designer herself, Jules totally rocks the beachy/resort look without being sickeningly sweet and embraces designer prints like ikat (so is Gucci for Spring 2010, like this pink ikat dress). I adore these looks and wish it were warm enough to toss one on right now. Alas, I’m reduced to throwing on my big, ugly down coat once more.

For the Love of Hardware

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

boston-showroom

I totally dork out on hardware. I guess this is why I do what I do- seeing a gorgeous period style door hinge just gets me all sorts of giddy. There is no better place to oogle luxurious, historically influenced hardware than E.R. Butler in Boston (or NYC). The shop itself is to die for gorgeous, set on Boston’s most charming Charles Street. I’ve always said that hardware is like the jewelry of a room (lighting too, but I digress) and these people treat it as such. Just check out some of the amazing goods they produce, all organized on their site by time period:

0305

0904

But that’s not all- they also carry some make-you-drool tabletop accessories. I always find myself pressing my face to their shop window and coveting these inset ceramics:

And how about these sweet votives shaped like tulips and nests? Can’t you see a bevy of them scattered across a tabletop amongst simple flowers for a ethereal centerpiece?

And not only do they carry jewelry for the home, they also carry actual jewelry. Most notably the vintage pieces from the perfectly curated collection of Brooklyn’s Erie Basin. Consider me obsessed.

I could pontificate for hours about the joys of vintage jewelry- but I’ll just leave you with pictures of their vintage (and one new designer) engagement rings. While it seems that most girls are focused on big ass bling, I think if I were to choose again I’d choose something delicate, small and with history like these pieces.

Vamp It Up.

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

I am unabashedly going to geek out so hardcore today over the release of New Moon at midnight tonight!  I’ve got a great event to go to first at Luna Boston, and then a pre-party with some equally excited women at which I’ll change from my “designer persona” duds  into this little number and completely FREAK MY FREAK until midnight when I’ll be in the theaters with throngs of screaming ladies watching the movie! It’s like Christmas morning!

And you thought I was cool….

I did have a reader write me a while ago asking me if I would do a Twilight inspired room post. If any day is appropriate for me to do this, it’s today.  I wanted it to reflect the dark moodiness of the movie, but not the typical “black and red” vampire color scheme.  So instead I chose black, white and deep forest green, which reminds me of the mossy, damp town of Forks (wow, I can’t believe I’m writing this). And what better room to base on Edward and Twilight than a bedroom? (wink, wink) Since Edward is 100+ years old, I wanted the room to have a mix of antique styles from different decades-almost as if they were collected throughout time. Everything has a reference to the book (canopy bed, fur blanket, deer head, etc.) and I think all and all, it looks quite chic and not “Twilight” at all! The perfect room for the grown up Twi-hard who doesn’t want posters on her wall!

The room itself would be very much like Jenna Lyon’s bedroom- creamy marble mantle, black walls and great architectural detail. I’d make the focus piece this antiqued mirrored “True Romance” Neirmann Weeks bed (hey, vampires are loaded so budget isn’t a factor). I’d pop an alabaster deer head above the headboard for a really graphic, unexpected punch. And the room would smell of Diptyque’s Baies Noir candles…

Picture 13Picture 4

Picture 42Picture 48

An antique rug and deep green velvet drapes would create a really rich atmosphere.

Picture 18Picture 26

Simple sleek white with black  Yves Delorme bedding and a faux fur throw (hello Jacob) at the foot and mirrored pillows for a shimmery effect.

Picture 39Picture 36

A antique dresser topped with bell jars covering plants and mosses and tons of candles in mercury holders.

Picture 32

Picture 19Picture 16Picture 44

Wall decor would be varied- a really large format photograph on one wall that looks oh-so appropriate, something modern and abstract on another (this is Amanda Talley) and a Venetian mirror above the dresser (to reflect the Italian component of the book)

And by that, of course, Sapien bookshelves stacked with old books:

Picture 46Picture 47

Of course I had to create a themed cocktail for the party leading up to the midnight showing, so here it is:

Picture 41

The Sparkly Vampire Martini

(a.k.a. the Cullentini, a.k.a. What Will Get Me Drunk Enough To Deal With Hordes of Screaming Teenagers at Midnight Tonight)

1 1/2 shots citrus vodka (you can make it 2 if you want to SEE sparkles)

splash of Chambord

1/2 shot simple syrup

1 shot pomegranate juice (POM is good)

squeeze of fresh lemon juice

rub rim of lemon wedge around rim of glass and coat in sparkly sugar (mine is Stirrings Lemon Drop Sugar Rim)

Shake and pour into glass. Drink enough that when you get to the theater for the midnight New Moon showing you start kissing the Rob Pattinson cardboard cutout on display while your friends laugh/take pictures to post on Facebook.

Faux Fur Love

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

I am in search of the perfect faux fur vest for fall/winter a la Rachel Zoe.  She even has her own design for QVC that I might investigate seeing as it must be fabulous if she put her name on it I am pissed I missed out on b/c it’s now SOLD OUT. Grrrr.

However, while at my photo shoot yesterday at the Webster showroom at the BDC, there was this MAGNIFICENT faux fur throw that sent me into a bit of a giddy spell. It was perfection, and way out of my budget, but I insisted we find a place for it in a shot or two- despite the photographers obvious dislike of it. Hello, it’s me- pile on the faux fur and zebra!

Anyways, now I am obsessed with finding a gorgeous faux fur throw for my new “neutral” space I hope to create (remember, I’m on a neutral kick).  Fur ads such a great texture to a room when combined with sleek metals, glass, linens, leathers and such. Just look at these spaces with (hopefully faux) fur throws… yummy, right? Especially the first one with my other obsession-black walls!

Picture 24Picture 25Picture 26Picture 46I am pretty sold on this one, but it’s also pretty darn pricey for something I may decide I “hate” in a year.

Picture 45This one is a close second and more realistic since it’s so much cheaper!

Picture 47Pottery Barn even has a few to chose from!

Picture 48This light lynx throw is pretty subtle and lovely too

Picture 49

Thanks to a reader tip, Z Gallerie has two gorgeous ones as well for under $100!

How I wish I had one to cozy up with right now!

Rendered Breathless and Inspired…

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

Wow.
I practically trembling over the excitement I feel after just finishing looking at what is going to be my new #1 source of inspiration. No longer will I need to feel the exquisite pangs of sadness when Domino no longer arrives in my mailbox, because Lonny Magazine, the online brainchild of Michelle Green (of the fabric company Rubie Green) and Patrick Cline has launched and they have outdone themselves on so many levels.  Not only are the styles and editorial concepts pure genius and very Domino-esque, the ability to “flip through pages”  and click on an item you see featured and be brought right to the website for purchase is a dream. They have a rocketing success on their hands and I’m in awe of their hard work and drive to make something so beautiful for the public to enjoy. I bow down to you this morning, Michelle and Patrick. I hope you are off celebrating in a really huge way!
Now, to get myself involved somehow…. :)
Just check out some of the images from the first issue of Lonny and try not to spend an entire hour devouring it like I just did.

All photos by Patrick Cline, who is clearly, a genius.

Lustworthy: SJP’s Turquoise Chandelier

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

I’ve always LOVED this photo of SJP’s Hampton’s dining room (I’d add a rug and some modern art though- just FYI).  I recall that the fixture was vintage, but I found one almost identical on Tonic Home- it’s called the Sara (coincidence?) and comes in a bevy of colors! What a GREAT way to add a pop of color to a dining room!
(Also still coveting the mismtached chairs all painted black!)
