The Pretty/ Ugly Lamp Debate

Monday, May 13th, 2013

I have got to finish up my house. While my dining chair choice is giving me ulcers, I have one purchase I think I can finalize soon…. a floor lamp for the living room. Specifically this corner:

The basket will move and a floor lamp will live there as we need more light in this space until we save up to do recessed lighting in here later on.  I have been hemming and hawing about what style lamp to buy but find myself totally attracted to the statement that french designer Serge Mouille’s lamps make in a space.  I have a lot of brass in here right now, so something decidedly NON metallic would be great.  But sometimes I see these lights independently and think “they are kind of ugly.” They are the definition of ugly/pretty.  They look like insects or something, yet they can totally elevate a space from boring to AWESOME.

These two are the real deal Mouille fixtures on 1st Dibs- the floor lamp going for a cool $2,911,  and the ceiling fixture will set you back over six grand. Yowzers. So not in my budget. Not even remotely.

Michelle Adams’ apartment featured what I thought was a Mouille lamps but turns out it’s a great replica that will only cost you $575. So we’re back in the game!

From White on White the Praying Mantis lamp (see, I told you it was insect-like) looks almost identical. I think it’s too big though, I’d totally love a single version of this in my space.

Other lamps in the running:

This one from White on White too. Might also be too big though. And a lot of brass.

I love love love love this lamp too. The desktop version is sick too. The clear glass would be great in front of that window!

And this one. Kinda great, right?

Dining Room Dilemma

Thursday, January 10th, 2013

As I sit in bed (STILL!) and listen to the construction workers downstairs banging away at our kitchen and dining room I am reminded that I have yet to pick a dining room fixture.  My dining “room” is really open to the kitchen so the fixture has to work with the Hicks pendants I’ve already purchased to go over the peninsula. Little did I know how hard this would be.  I’m feeling like the pendants are a statement so the chandelier can’t be a statement….yet I want it to be. ARGH.  I was SO glad to see on Million Dollar Decorators that Mary McDonald had just as hard of a time picking stuff for herself as I am!

Here are the fixtures I’ve been considering– help me decide. I know you don;t know the other items in the space yet- but let me share that my table is round and whitewashed/ grey washed oak and the walls are light grey grasscloth….

Love this Arteriors retro fixture SO MUCH, but I’m afraid it’s too much for the space and the style of my house. Or is it super fun?

A simple yet modern option also from Arteriors.

I’ve always loved the Visual Comfort Paris Flea Market chandelier but perhaps to trad and busy?

I think this Arteriors one is cool and modern yet simple but maybe too industrial?

A totally alternative option of an open modern lantern from Hudson Valley?

SUPER basic Visual Comfort Bryant? Too safe?

On the Hunt

Proof that all things come in cycles- hunter green is back with a vengeance this season both in fashion and interiors.  Once a color I loved in the 80′s and early 90′s (I certainly had hunter green Limited Too mom jeans), the color now has a bit more of a luxe look- especially when paired with gold.  It also happens to be a VERY good color for brunettes to wear specifically- making blah brown look richer and pale skin look more alabaster.  Here’s some inspiration to prove my point:

(Dying over both this Philip Lim bag and Tory Burch one as well.)

I personally am loving hunter green and light dusty pink, which the the scheme for my guest room based on that amazing vintage fabric I found and made into a bolster pillow.  I decided to paint the walls a light pink (Benjamin Moore’s Blanched Coral- awesome) to bring out the pink in the pillow and I love it! I also have a vintage chair that will go in here in a deep, deep green velvet, which I love next to the wall color. Please pardon this completely un-styled camera phone shot:

You get the picture though.  Here are some other ideas to utilize this rich color combo in the home.  Hunter green also pairs amazing with turquoise, camel and LEOPARD!
