My Week in Instagrams

If you aren’t on Instagram yet…. GET WITH IT! It’s my favorite social media app by MILES and it’s such a fun way to chronicle your life in filtered, beautiful images.  Here are some things that went down in my world this week:

I had dinner at fellow designer Mally Skok’s INSANE home.  I mean, it’s 100% my dream house….

Her dining room has upholstered walls. This style is what I would call Traditional Badass.

Need a close-up? Thought so.  Her fabrics are awesome, but this one happens to be Quadrille Contessa.

I got myself a faux bust for the bar.  Goddess of the Drink. All hail.

My new line with Jill Rosenwald fresh outta the kiln with the cutest little lower case monogram!

Part of the line…. I happen to be super into the cream and sugar set.  They’ll be up for purchase in a couple weeks and you’ll be the first to know!!!!

Frozen yogurt break, nerds.

I took the ferry to the Hamptons. It was peaceful and reminded me that I am SO much happier and calmer by the ocean.  Good thing my parents are building a gorgeous home by the shore right now! #movingbackhome #nomoreemptynest!

So happy how these Ballard barstools came back from our upholsterer for out Hampton’s job!  We did some custom pieced upholstery to get this look and it’s pretty awesome.

I got to visit the new Serena & Lily store in Wainscott. It’s as adorable as you might imagine, but this wall o’ art was my fave.

So many people commented on how cute this top was.  It’s cheap and you can get it here.

I babysat for my Mom’s new 11 week old Golden puppy Barney last weekend. He bit a hole in the above cute shirt, but because that face is so smushy and amazing I don’t care.

The view from their porch.  This is not England, but it could be.

While there I went to the nearby antique shops and saw this lucite goodness. I paced, I pondered… and I left empty handed.

But then I went back and bought the (now known to be) Thorpe candlesticks, which I had the intention of selling.  But then I put them on my mantle and….. scene.  Welcome to your new home, crazy pretzel, lucite candlesticks. Would it be so bad if I try to get the metal part brass plated??

Then my vintage Brown Jordan patio set that was my paternal grandmothers came back from the shop all freshly enameled in black and ready for my patio (which starts soon).  Planning on topping those seats with black and white wide strip cushions and adding a white umbrella! Perfect, and meaningful.

Yesterday we were setting up for a book photoshoot all day today!  I am SO,SO obsessed with this tablestop setting I created- especially that Juliska Country Estate china.  I think I need it (in blue).  Those ombre napkins were under $4 at Crate and Barrel too!

PHEW. I’m exhausted. But more to do…. Stay tuned!!!

The Erin Gates for Jill Rosenwald Collection!

As a lot of you know I share my studio space with some incredible, creative women- the mother hen of all of us is ceramicist and designer Jill Rosenwald– (also of Fallon rug fame).  Jill and I are constantly bouncing ideas off each other and so we finally decided it was high time we did a line together.  I am psyched to introduce the Erin Gates for Jill Rosenwald Collection!  I was inspired by a pattern I have on a basket in my entryway that is of African origin that I thought would translate really well into ceramics.  It is reminiscent of chevron but a bit funkier.  Each piece comes in two colorways- black/peony and j.crew/mint.  All pieces (except lamps) have gold rims or edges. And the best part? We’re donating 15% of all proceeds to the Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy Relief.

In order to get these in time for Christmas you must order in the next THREE DAYS! So until they are posted on Jill’s e-commerce site please e-mail me to place your order!!!!

…And yours truly is flabbergasted to find herself amongst the pages!  As I mentioned a while ago I had a bog shoot in NYC, and this is what it was for!  Oprah and IKEA have partnered together for a year long initiative, The Life Improvement Project aimed at helping people better their lives through their homes, one idea at a time.  Launching October 16th the website will be a place where people can share and gather ideas on how to improve their spaces and lives within. With each submitted or shared project, IKEA will make a $1 donation (up to $50,000) to Save the Children’s Early Steps for School Success program and each sumission enters you to win IKEA gift cards to implement MORE great changes in your home.

I was so honored to be asked to be on the Life Improvement Squad as the interior design expert along with entertaining guru Amy Atlas, life coach Susan Hyatt and green designer Cathy Hobbs.  We are going to be giving our own tips on the site as well as appear at O/ IKEA events in different parts of the country, starting with the O You!  Conference in LA next week! I’ll be in LA all week doing shoots for OWN and appearing at the conference and IKEA events and will blog from there all about this amazing experience (and if I get to meet Oprah herself- we shall see!)

I am really excited about this opportunity and hope you guys will pick up a copy of O to check it out. In the meantime, here are some IKEA all-stars I love using in my designs….

This rug has been sold out for months and months, and I just saw that it’s back in stock in my local store and I am tempted to drop everything to go get it! It’s exactly what we’ve wanted for our offices!

Speaking of offices, I’d say 75% of ours is from IKEA.  Our desks are actually dining tables and we have two Expedit units with baskets and bins in them for fabric samples.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve used these sturdy shelving units in homes for books, kids toys and the like. I am LOVING the new high gloss gray finish too!

That armoire is from IKEA too! A major face since it’s got such great hardware and is a gorgeous color!

The Malm dresser is one of the most hacked IKEA products out there- whether it’s new hardware to make it look like a campaign chest or O’Verlays to add some decoration to the fronts, I love the flexibility of this piece! Also loving the new mirrored version- so sleek and glamorous.

Another great hack on the Rast dresser– amazing. I may have to try this! Instructions HERE.

For lighting these two are are super stars- the clean modern Brasa and the fun and funky Maskros (now in a smaller size too!)

The Docksta table is now a classic affordable piece of modern design as are the acrylic Tobias chair.

Picking up some cheap art (and frames for that matter) is usually something I do too- check out this vintage  botanical chart print and Matisse print– both fantastic looking for very little money!

So, Monday Rocked.

Monday morning I woke up and was perusing my Twitter feed when I saw this.

I read and re-read that four or five times before I could comprehend she was talking about MY blog. And then I freaked the FRIG out. Why? Only because I have worshiped Ali Wentworth for years. Her writing has cracked me up beyond words, her every TV appearance has left me in stitches and her homes have graced the pages of Elle Decor and Arch Digest. I mean, if I went to Hogwarts (I wish) and was to conjure my Patronus it would be in the shape of Ali Wentworth. So this tweet from her pretty much rocked my world and then some. So in “I’m Not Worthy” honor here are some of my fave spaces from Ali’s homes in NY (decorated by THE Michael Smith) and D.C. (decorated by Elizabeth Martin).

(Leopard DVF dress? Soul mate much?)

And then later in the day the new issue of Matchbook Magazine came out featuring a story about Two Penny Blue! (P.S. How awesome are our shipping boxes, if I do say so myself??)

Not a bad way to start the week, huh?

Introducing Two Penny Blue (& Giveaway!)

About two years ago my girlfriend Marie came to me with an idea- to start a fashion brand that focuses on doing one thing really, really well- and that one thing is blazers.  Most women have a few in their closet as staples- for work, with jeans on the weekend, over a dress on a date- but she and I both could not find ones that fit really well and were made of fun fabrics AND weren’t $800 or more.  So for the past two years Marie and I have worked from sketches, to refining the fits many, many times( to the dismay of our amazing pattern makers), took trips to LA and NYC to source fabrics and buttons and linings and now IT’S LIVE- please meet Two Penny Blue!

All the jackets are made in the USA (New York City, to be exact) by the pattern makers that also work on labels such as Helmut Lang and Alice and Olivia.  The cuts are meant to be variations on classics with attention to every little detail (from functioning sleeve buttons to flattering hemlines and vents).  The fabrics consist of silks hand dyed in India and woven linen and cotton from Italy. The whole idea is to keep these cuts season after season (while adding some new ones) but switch up the fabrics and details- that way once you find a jacket you LOVE the fit of, you can get it in season appropriate fabrics! Nothing worse than when a company stops making a classic, great fitting piece, right? But each season’s fabrics are limited edition- so once they are gone, they are GONE. So hurry! :)

And it’s important to note that a wonderful component of our company is that for every blazer you buy we will donate a school uniform to a girl in Africa. It’s really important for us to give back- read more about it HERE!

We love them. And sure hope you do too. (And just wait until you see the packaging! :) )

The Cambridge- classic schoolboy. In woven silk or linen/cotton blend.

(recognize our model below? That because she just won Miss USA! YAY Olivia!)

The Audrey Jacket– double breasted and cropped. Hand dyed woven silk. Incredible fit.

The Hudson Blazer– long, lean and sexy. In white cotton. Fierce.

The Ikat Topper– do I need to say anything? It’s ADORABLE!

We also are have a really awesome selection of jewelry, bags and umbrellas!
