My Favorite Gadgets for the Home

Susie Homemaker I am not (it may be pretty, but not always tidy), but there are some little gadgets we have at home that really are amazing at making life easier and that I see as really valuable investments in our hectic, busy lives.  I thought I’d share them here in case perhaps you needed recommendations or have your own life-saving device to enlighten us all about!

I hesitated to buy this Dyson cordless hand vacuum for a long time and tried cheaper versions that sucked (or actually, didn’t suck!) This thing is AMAZING. It acts as a dust-buster and powerful vacuum all in one- amazing for easy cleanups or a quick clean before company comes. INCREDIBLE if you have kids and dogs. I have clients who keep one on every floor of their house. For my smaller house, one is fine. :)

Coastal Living’s Idea House: A Master Class in Decorating

I had grand plans to attend the Coastal Living Idea House in Newport recently but we had a Henry meltdown/ nap protest and I didn’t get to go. But I am going to try to get there because HOLY HELL it is spectacular. One of my junior designers Kristen went and took a zillion pics and I’m psyched to show you because Mark Sikes, the designer of the house and one of my personal favorites of all time, did such an incredible job that I wanted to walk through what makes this house an incredible example of impeccable decorating. I want to LIVE in this room….

This Old House Renovation: Jill Goldberg

I’m back! A week off from blogging was just what I needed to get excited about sharing some cool stuff with you guys the rest of the summer. We had an overwhelming, but nice, trip to Maine and some QT with Henry which was wonderful. He’s growing faster than I can even fathom and so time away from work is crucial for me as a mom. But MAN does it feel great to be back at work! :) I have a new accessory collection launching this week, a re-branding effort underway and a new renovation project starting at my house in August- so lots and lots going on!
To kick off the week I wanted to share with you this incredible project done by fellow Boston designer, and friend, Jill Goldberg (who owns Hudson in the South End, Boston’s best home store in my opinion!)  She was chosen to do this renovation project in conjunction with This Old House in Arlington, MA and I absolutely LOVE it and have not seen much of it on the ol’ interwebs so I thought it would be fun to share as well as some insight from Jill on the design! The clients wanted a very serene, California vibe that took cues from the style and age of the old home, and I certainly feel it was a very successful result!

This picture had me at hello- from the modern bubble chandelier by Oly (I found a more affordable one- see bottom of post) to the oak cabinetry, wall paneling, William Morris paper, modern slipcovered chairs and sculptural table….it’s an A+++ in my book (and also one of Jill’s favorite rooms for it’s timeless yet modern feel).

Live Like Jackie O (For A Price)

It was announced this week that Jackie O’s childhood home, Merrywood in McLean, Virginia, is up for sale. For a cool $49.5 million (seriously, who has that much money???)  And while that price makes this home insanely, insanely unattainable short of Jeff Bezos (P.S. Amazon is taking over the WORLD)- it’s so fun to look at, no? Even Andrew sent me the link to this as a blog suggestion!

Now THIS is an entry! If I were in charge of the redesign, I’d keep that wallpaper. And that mirror. (Barry Dixon did the home as shown)
