Nooks and Crannies: Tiny, Cozy Spaces to Get You Through Winter

The crappiest part of winter is upon us, and if you live in a cold climate I bet you feel a little like me.  You just want to be cozy.  Nothing sounds better to me right now then a hot cup of coffee (or glass of wine) snuggled up by a fire with some good reading material.  Creating built in reading nooks, window seats or even daybeds is such a fabulous way to add charm to your home and create extra enjoyable space within very small square footage.

Turning Interiors Into Runway Gold

Last week I had the honor of judging the IIDA Fashion Show held at the Boston Convention Center. It’s a huge and fun event that is held annually and I was SO impressed with the level of creativity that the teams from some of Boston’s biggest interior and architectural design firms brought to the table, er, runway!  The rules are that each team has to create runway looks using interior materials- from fabrics to tile, lighting, furniture parts, rugs and on and on.  It’s a fascinating exploration of materials and innovative craftsmanship and I was in awe of what I saw! There is a theme every year and this year it was “coutourism”- blending couture design with the concept of tourism.  People took that idea and ran with it- from actual destinations to more heady concepts of time travel, space and dreaming.

I am sure you will be as amazed with these designs as I was.

Framed Intaglio Art

I have long loved the classical beauty and intricate details of intaglios- but especially displayed in modern frames and hung in groupings on the wall.  Here are some awesome examples of a variety of settings using the traditional art in fun ways:

My Favorite DIY Hack.

When I was finishing up my former master bedroom I really wanted to share how great this little project came out but couldn’t because I had to wait for the book. But now I can! I am no DIY master- that’s just not my thing and it’s important that as a designer, blogger and person I honor my strengths and know my weaknesses (like any projects involving a power drill, sanding or sewing, thirty seven steps or incredible amounts of patience). However, sometimes a budget restriction requires you to get a little bit crafty no matter how DIY-challenged you are. I was DYING to get a fabulous dresser by Redford House for this room.  But my renovation and decorating budget was completely busted and so I had to improvise. Enter IKEA, some nice hardware, Andrew and his powder drill!

The result is here- lovely, functional and totally doable!

Best Thing I’ve Seen This Week…

I about keeled over when I saw this little living room/entry set up A House in the Hills just installed in her home. That. mirror. is. everything.

LOOK.

ENHANCE!

Ok, I will stop cracking myself up now. But for serious, let’s talk about this. I love the floating shelf with storage that she sketched up and had her carpenter build. It’s fantastic and was only $350.  The mirror, which I assumed was some vintage marvel, is actually from Restoration Hardware (P.S. here’s another big round mirror I am obsessed with)! Since that is her front door right there it helps define an “entry” area without taking up too much room. Genius.

But let’s back up again and discuss the fact that she made a leather sectional look super chic.  The clean lines and bench seat help a lot, so if you’re looking for one take a cue from this. Her fab pillows are from Amber Interiors and help funk things up. All in all, I am loving this bohemian/modern look!
