A Retreat in the Woods

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

When I saw the pictures from this NY Times story on my pal Sami’s blog, my heart was awash in joy.  This blonde sprite of a woman,  Sandra Foster, took what was a decrepit hunting shack and turned it into a dream escape just for herself on a budget of $3,000- FOR EVERYTHING.  While it has no kitchen or bath (those necessities reside in the trailer she and her husband live in on the property), this Victorian dollhouse is simply a place for her to retreat to alone. Wouldn’t it be so lovely (not matter how much you like spending time with your S.O.) to have a little place to call your own? Where you could go with a cup of tea and paint or re-read all your Twilight books (is that just me?)

While this little house was created from Sandra’s own sweat and determination (she did the construction herself), there is a deeper, sadder story to this take that makes the final result all the more sweet.  Her family lost their home when she was a teenager and while homeless Sandra dreamed of a home like this one, full of antiques and frills.  Her husband and she  have had their share of monetary troubles as well.  He’s recovering from an injury and she’s been working two jobs to support them. I must admit, they make a visually unexpected pairing, but they both love to garden, and have found a quiet life that suits them just fine– and that makes me smile and believe in the enormous power that love has. Read the entire story here- it’s a truly magical, interesting piece.

I can think of no one more deserving for this darling space than Sandra (who is also a blogger!)

West Elm Fall Preview

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

I got these images for the West Elm fall preview last night and I am LOVING the look! Some of the items are available now on the website, others launching in August! Even better news, they are going to be launching a program in which you can choose from 26 new fabrics for upholstered sofas and sectionals! It always frustrated me that there were no choices in the matter when it came to fabrics for their cool designs! Happy dance!

Sofa Love

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

I was introduced to Custom Sofa Design by Little Green Notebook last week, and man am I glad I was! I cannot get over the styles they have available at cheaper than cheap prices! Darn close copies of Jonathan Adler, Mitchell Gold, Crate and Barrel and Lee Industries pieces with a decent fabric selection for you to create a custom sized sofa for your space.  This is coming right in time for me since I need a new sofa/sectional STAT for my new home (and they say any style can be made into a sectional!)

Homegoods Winners!!!

Monday, April 5th, 2010

I am blogging from an old PC laptop this morning after forgetting my power cord in CT  so I’m going to make it brief until I get to my office and can post more of the FABULOUS entries I got for the “best bargain” contest, but I wanted to post the winners first thing!  I loved seeing all your clever and jaw-dropping finds and choosing five was INSANELY difficult! But I think I’m pretty happy with what I narrowed it down to:

1) This entry from Julie in California  is ridiculous since it’s not one item but two- the dining table was $35 and the amazing orange buffet (very Pieces) was only $40 (she painted it orange and I LOVE the color) . I adore the whole feel of this room!

2) This lucite bar cart is something I wish I had for my office- and reader Irene  got it for only $60! In an antiques store this would go for hundreds if not over $1,000.

3) Deanna found these little benches at Homegoods for $35 each  and used a small amount of designer fabric to recover them.  Now they look incredibly expensive! (Also, the fab zig zag wool rug was also from Homegoods for $50!)

4) This chandelier sent in by Callie in Atlanta made me GASP. It is drop dead gorgeous.  At $350 from an antiques shop it’s not dirt cheap, but a COMPLETE bargain as this baby is worth much, MUCH more than that!

5) Another item that isn’t exactly pocket change but something that would sell for triple or quadruple what was paid for it is this modern armoire sent in by Beth.  She paid $300 for it on eBay (plus free delivery) and we all know that it would be thousands at an antiques store!

If I posted you as a winner please email e your mailing address to eosgiveaway@gmail.com!!!! Congrats to all and I’ll post the MANY runners up later this morning/afternoon!

Homegoods Gift Card Giveaway!

Monday, March 29th, 2010

As part of the spring contest I’m judging for Homegoods, they were kind enough to give me FIVE $50 gift cards to give away to my readers! Knowing how psyched you all were the last time I had one to give away, I am delighted to be able to offer you more opportunities to win! However, there is a catch.  I’m going to run my own little contest in which I want to see your most exciting, best and proudest bargain purchase for your home!  You know, that item you got for next to nothing that everyone compliments?  The one that makes you gleeful when you get to tell people just how cheap it was knowing they won’t believe you? Yeah, send me a pic or two to eosgiveaway@gmail.com of your best finds, how much they were and where you found them and the top five winners (as judged by yours truly) will receive gift cards!

Now, the items don’t have to be from Homegoods, but I bet a lot of yours are. I went this weekend looking for lamps for the charity dream room project I am installing this week, and not only did I find the PERFECT lamps, I found THIS:

IMG00458Oh hello grey and cream imperial trellis rug! You are comin’ home with mama! Can you believe this? I said out loud in the aisle “you have got to be KIDDING ME”. The grandmother looking at bathmats next to me gave me glance suggesting I was crazy.

$50. Now in my bathroom. Holla.

Also spotted were about 100 incredible lamps, my favorites being these with the black and cream ikat shades:

IMG00461

And this amazing mirror (which could look stellar painted white, black or a bright color):

IMG00457

I forgot to take pics of the other stuff I actually bought: a killer Buddha statue for the office, geode book ends (also for my office) and great Missoni-esque pillows for the old wing chairs in my office that make the chartreuse old upholstery look somewhat chic.  I also spotted some great bedding, lanterns, grey velvet modern club chairs and faux imperial trellis pillows, but I had to restrain myself a bit.

So email your entries to eosgiveaway@gmail.com by Thursday at midnight and the winners will be announced Friday! I can’t wait to see what you’ve got!

HomeGoods Spring Challenge!

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Picture 11

I am delighted to share with you that I am going to be a judge for the HomeGoods Spring Challenge happening this month! Every week, starting this week, there is a call on the Homegoods site for photos of a spring trend as executed by you in your home.  A panel of judges, including yours truly, will select a winner each week who will receive a $100 HomeGoods gift card and a Flip Mini Camcorder!  Those weekly winners will be entered to win a grand prize of a $5,000 shopping spree at HomeGoods (imagine how much stuff you could get with 5 G’s at HG!?!?) Not to mention, I have five $50 gift cards I’ll be awarding to readers in my own little contest (stay tuned for details on that!).

Here are some of the fun items coming to HomeGoods for spring:

Taking Stock at Overstock

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Overstock.com is fast becoming one of my go-to sites for affordable furniture, accessories, lighting, art- you name it. But did you know they have some lovely TILE as well? If you are renovating a bathroom you might want to check out these classics available on the site:

And how can resist these beauties- at such great prices? Many of these are copies of design classics, but if you can’t afford the real thing and you’re dying for the look I see NO PROBLEM in getting a copy. No one will know. Just don’t buy fake Louis Vuitton. That I cannot support.

Oh hello, fake Colette bed, how are you? Would you like to come live with me?

The Butterfly Chair Flies Again…

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

This is how my brain works, in case you are wondering.  Yesterday I saw the line-up for this years Coachella Music Festival (Jay-Z, Gorillaz, Thom Yorke, Sia, MGMT, Passion Pit…oh my) and thought about how much FUN it would be to go.  Then I thought “Wait, it’s near Palm Springs!” which can only mean one thing if you are me: The Parker a.k.a. Heaven on Earth. Seriously, have you been? Because if you have not, you need to go. Jonathan Adler everything+ fire-pits + bocce courts and ping pong tables by the pool + the “lemonade stand” (the lemonade has vodka in it, natch) + a crazy spa + staff wearing hot pink pants + the best pancakes ON EARTH. Have I convinced you? No? How about the fact that when we went we sat next to Amanda Peet at the pool while watching Taye Diggs play ping pong with his shirt off after brushing past Ed Norton in the lobby. I’m not even kidding you. It was like Us Weekly in the flesh, which as you can imagine, sent me into a near coma. Ok, that was massive digression- see, this is how the creative brain works. Anyways, while thinking about the Parker I thought about the best evening in which we sat around the fire pit in huge white butterfly chairs while a waiter brought us wine.  I forgot how damn comfortable those chairs are and how, when used in the right setting, they aren’t as “college dorm” as I remember. So I went in search of images of butterfly chairs being used in modern interiors (and some exteriors).  They are super affordable and add a little devil-may-care modern casualness to any room. Perhaps you should reconsider them ( and find a way to sit in the ones at the Parker!)
