As we finish up the last few items from our first phase of renovations, I can’t help but think of what’s next! And also, think of warmer days ahead where we can spend time outside! So today I thought I’d share my plans for my patios and exterior paint that I plan to execute come spring. The house exterior is in great shape, I just am NOT a yellow person (it’s much more yellow in real life than this listing photo).
So the plan is to paint it white (more of an OFF white than this very stark white Photoshopped image shows) with medium grey/greige shutters and front door. I want the copper roof to shine and am toying with adding a middle window back in above the front door (where right now there is panel). I think I’m going to paint first and see how I feel. We need to edit the landscape (more simple, large boxwoods, less crowding) and some nice planters flanking the front door.
Looking at something like Ben Moore Swiss Coffee (left) with something like one of these greys – Ben Moore Graystone (middle) or Gettysburg Grey (right)
The barn/garage off to the side of the house I’m thinking I’ll paint the grey shutter/door color…
It’s a little tone on tone, but with black hardware and a new copper weathervane (the owners took the one that was up there)
In the side yard we bought a really gorgeous play set for the kids from CedarWorks, which we can see from the porch and family room.
This is a rendering of the exact one I built for them….
This is what it looks like – you can customize them all to suit your kids, needs and size of yard.
Here is the patio area – there’s a little step down in the middle, defining two areas.
The yard is a HUGE reason we bought this house. It’s AMAZING.
Looking back at the house/patio – the lower door under the stairs goes into the playroom with a half bath.
I wanted this to look really classic and timeless, so I worked with Frontgate to choose some all-weather wicker with neutral cushions as the base and then layered in some teak and and ivory accents. I’m super excited about the chaises, as I look forward to a hard lounge in one with a girlfriend and some wine when the weather gets better. I used these exact ones at my showhouse patio space in Atlanta and have loved them ever since (below).
So here’s what we’re getting! I CANNOT wait!
Sofa // Chairs // Coffee Table // Side Tables // Accent Stool // Fire Pit // Patio Heater // Umbrella // Umbrella Table/Stand // Chaise // Lanterns // Planters // Copper Hose Container // Square Pillows // Solid Lumbar Pillows // Patterned Bolsters
Also am planning to work in this small vintage Brown Jordan Calcutta dining set from my grandmother as well.
The upper porch is where we will grill and eat meals with the kids – the french doors open from the family room and create an awesome flow for entertaining inside and out.
Up on the deck (which we hope to re-stain less red), we have our grill and the dining table and chairs from our old house from Frontgate:
I cannot WAIT for nice weather in this house! It’s going to be such an incredible game changer for our family! And planning this makes me even more anxious for the seasons to change!
I love the exterior color choices. What color are you planning for the gutters?
Erin!!! This house is beautiful. So excited for you!

Replacing that middle window is a MUST!
It looks a bit off, otherwise.
Perhaps I am biased, as my grandparents have a very similar home, also with the sloping copper roof over the front door & 3 arched windows above.
The middle of their 3 windows also sits mid-way to the top of the staircase, where there is also a landing. Every year my grandmother places an additional Christmas tree atop an etagere on the landing, so it can be seen through the window & it looks so festive- indoors & out. Not that Buddy the Elf would be interested in that ;)
Cedarworks is the best! You MUST spring for the assembly too, the guy who does Wellesley is great, and you cannot do it on your own, it was the best $500ish I even spent, especially to know it’s not going to fall apart when my kids are up in the fort!
Oh I did!!!!
Please let us know how the umbrella table/stand does! I have been looking at that for our pool area at our house on the bay. I have the copper hose container. Very nice. ✔️ I can’t wait to see your final results and what beautiful floral touches your mom helps with, Her property is so gorgeous.
I am just so in love with your new home and all that you have done so far! New paint and furniture are so great. Yay you! I say put the middle window back in (per photocopied pic). This girl is dreaming of something similar someday…….😊
Very jealous of this beautiful home!
Game ON!! franki
Lovely plans! Do you store all of your outside furniture during the winter months?
I will now that I have a barn! But previously just used furniture covers!
Thrilled for your family. What a great space for the kids to play and the adults to lounge and sip. Family dinners. S’mores around that fire pit. Hide and go seek. Someday a kid friendly zipline.
I’ve heard if you get good quality outdoor cushions, a yearly pressure wash will keep them clean without hauling in and out after every rain…
Your plans sound perfect!! Can’t wait to see it executed.
Currently planning a patio as well and love Frontgate. Do you worry the white cushions will get dirty?
We have the same classic Hampton wicker pieces from Frontgate under our pergola. They look great as long as we cover them. It’s a bit difficult to unzip the cushions for washing. I am looking at an Outer outdoor wicker sofa with the built in covers this year as a replacement and will be selling the hampton set.
Erin,
You will love Gettysburg Gray BM.It has been on my exterior for years and recently painted and kept same color again.I used a black shutter which gives it a lot of depth.I live by the water and I especially like it as it everchanges during the day.It pulls green but it is never tiring.I pull up to my home and always smile with this color choice.Best yet I have not seen it used on other homes. It is a stand alone color.I used a white trim, but simply white would be nice also…good luck.

Love all of your plans, Erin, and am enjoying the beautiful work you are doing on this gorgeous house to make it your own. Just one thought to share–there used to be a stunning home in my neighborhood in No Va that reminds me of your new place. It was painted white but the shutters and front door were painted a softer paler shade of the verdigris roof. IT WAS STUNNING!!!!!! I have always wanted to see another house with that color palette since that one was perfection. Just want to be sure that you give that option a minute’s consideration. There is something very “pretty” about this new (to you) house and the softer verdigris accent color, rather than the more masculine choices you are considering is, would be a beautiful complement. Good luck!!
