Well here we are- we made it to another Friday! COVID cases are coming down, vaccines are (hopefully) on the rise and LET’S DO THIS PEOPLE!!! :)
Bringing levity to life this week, was the rabid internet debate regarding Gen Z’s declaration that if you wear skinny jeans and part your hair on the side you are OLD. Anyone over the age of 30 pretty much recoiled in horror at this, including myself. First of all, I have seen what Gen Z wears and NO THANKS. Probably the most hideous styles I’ve seen since living through the late 80’s early 90’s when we did it first. And now it’s come out that they are drawing dark circles under their eyes because they think it looks COOL? Granted, I’m sure this is what my mom thought/thinks of jeans with holes in them (“why PAY for jeans with holes in them? It’s crazy!”) but come ON. Dark circles? Ladies, you gotta earn those, and when you do, you’ll pay lots of money to find products that get rid/conceal of them.
Anyways, back to skinny jeans. While I own a few bootcut pairs still, I never wear them because for them to look right and not drag on the ground (remember the rolled, stained, dirty gross hems of the ones we used to wear?) you have to wear heels or heeled boots. And let’s be honest, I’m not wearing those often these days. Mom jeans? Nope. Big loose boyfriend jeans? Nope. Flares? NOPE. Just NO. As I said yesterday on IG, you will have to pry my skinnies off my cold, dead corpse.
So here is a round up of my favorite skinny jeans, as well as some other favorites from people I trust :) Click images for links!
P.S. I almost exclusively wear AG Jeans right now- cycling between the Prima, which is a very slim mid-rise cigarette, the Farrah which is a high rise skinny (but not CRAZY high rise) and the Legging, which is more mid-rise super skinny (perfect with tall boots). They just fit me perfectly, stretch without having too much stretch and don’t bag out. They also have some great washes (the more expensive the better, unfortunately). Big fan.
And as far as the side part goes- I’m trying out a slightly off center part to mix it up with my side part, but I am all about the side part. Trends don’t determine your part, your FACE does. Whatever suite the shape of your face is how you should wear your hair. Me personally, I’m all about making sure my hair is on a postpartum recovery plan and taking care of it best I can. My personal routine for haircare below:
Have a great weekend everyone!
Another fashion friday post idea… what do you wear on a casual day in the spring/summer? I need ideas for going to the park, running errands, attending a kids birthday party? I want to burn all my clothes and start over, but I don’t know where to begin!
Be careful on the prenatal unless you are with child. I heard the amount of iron or something in them is too high for just one person. Just check with your doctor.
You are so right about fashion these days…WHAT..happened? its all so hideous and unflattering. Everything is boxy, too short, and doesn’t even look good on models. There was clearly a big sack/tent moment starting about 9-10yrs ago, but its gotten progressively uglier and less flattering since then. I don’t even know how its possible. The late 90s/aughts were clearly so much better for fashion.
My closet is full of skinny jeans with a couple pairs of boot cut, and my side part isn’t going anywhere. I’m already old so who cares?
Happy to see common sense has surfaced again…skinnies will never disappear as long as women have curves. The wide leg, girlfriend, boyfriend, jogger, or God help us-sweats, may be comfy, but they do nothing to make you look or feel like a woman.
I like skinnies too, they are flattering on me, but I hate how short most of the are. I want my pants to reach ALL the way to my ankles and not an inch shorter. This has been hard to find, both in jeans and leggings.
AG Prima are my fav as well and SIDE PART FOREVER!!!!!
This post was great! I have both the AG “Prima” & “Farrah” jeans and loooove them!! Thanks for your other suggestions, I’m going to try the Navy Shampoo & Conditioner.
I’m sure when I was in my 20’s, I thought women in their 40’s were so NOT COOL. Now that I’m that 40-something old lady, I honestly couldn’t give a capital F-off to what a 20-something thinks of my hair part.
I looked at the gummies that you take and it made me wonder where you are on the collagen powder band wagon???
“Ladies, you gotta earn those, and when you do, you’ll pay lots of money to find products that get rid/conceal of them.”
Bahahahaha! So true! :)
Gen Z here, no one cares if you wear straight or wide leg jeans. Just wear what you want. It’s just a trend, just like I’m sure your generation made trends when you all were our age. Not sure why you spend so much time worrying about if 10-20 year olds think you look “old.” Also, the dark circles is an attempt to make people feel less insecure about their dark circles and embrace them, not a battle of “who worked more.” Just wear what you want and don’t make a big deal out of it, age with grace.
So, my SIL (who is 15 years my junior and a hair stylist) cut my hair and parted it in the middle a few months ago. I realize now that maybe she thought I was looking too old with my side part. 😂
On the jeans front, my college roomie and I still send each other links of “the perfect” (insert wardrobe item here). She sent me this link to Good American jeans and I’m loving them. Great fit for this short & curvy gal. https://www.nordstrom.com/s/good-american-good-legs-ankle-skinny-jeans-regular-plus-size/5884774?origin=category-personalizedsort&breadcrumb=Home%2FBrands%2FGood%20American&color=blue260
You are fabulously chic and stylish. With legs forever. I don’t wear skinnies myself (not for this body) but they look great on so many women.
But I am delighted to find out my dark circles are now a fad. Since I’m stuck with them anyway.
Sounds like me! I don’t wear skinnies either because they are not flattering on my body type. But if I had endless legs- you can bet I’d wear them regardless of trend. I think the best part of aging is gaining the confidence to do you!
Great post, though I’m still desperately trying to locate the coveted mid-rise CoH jeans you mentioned in an earlier post.
Joie jeans were also a great find for my short legs…
The CoH Rocket!
Youth is wasted on the young isn’t it? Perhaps I’m overreacting but I find it hilarious that they are viewing being “old” negatively. Covid aside, my 30’s have been a thriving experience. Happily married, wonderful children, a lovely home that I can afford to furnish and decorate as I please, a circle of lovely friends and I know all the best spots for fancy cocktails, and what time of day Whole Foods isn’t busy. I’d never willingly go back to my 20’s thank you very much.
You couldn’t pay me to be in my 20’s again!
So much this! Exactly!
I also use the Hair, Skin, and Nail gummies. Mainly for nails, and I think they do help. I’ve always worn a side part and will not change!
Thank goodness! I’m 5 weeks postpartum and looking at new jeans. The wide leg ones do not look good to me…
Bravo!
This might be the nihilistic GenXer in me, but I think the fastest way to age oneself is to be a 40+ year old chasing the aesthetics and fashion of the 20 year old set on TikTok. Wear what you think looks good and be confident, kind, and intelligent – that’s universally beautiful.
Ha exactly- Gen X here with Gen Z daughters – I asked them – they said the joke was aimed at millennials who think they are still kids ! They’re absolutely right and it made me laugh! Btw Gen X have been through ALL the jeans styles ever invented – TWICE! :)
Cheers to this! And for being almost 40 and not giving AF what the youngsters think. ;)
I’ve been wearing my hair in a center part for over 5 years! Glad to hear it’s finally cool 😂
I am -ahem- not tall, and my favorite skinnies were the Banana Republic Zero Gravity Jean. I bought 3 pairs and have put my knee through 2. I wear the bad pairs at home and save the last pair for days when I need to look presentable on Casual Friday at the office (hardly ever). Jeans are a a constant struggle!
Breaking news…..Rue La La has AG Jeans on a great sale today! The Farrah is my favorite…comfortable and doesn’t bag. Cheers to side parts and skinny jeans!
The whole side part makes me laugh too. My hair parts wherever it chooses. Yes, I can try to blow-dry it away, but why not just let it do it’s thing??! And the dark undereye circles – I want to give them and their youthful, dewy skin a big middle finger as I’m up for two hours overnight with my 4 year old because she can’t sleep. ha!

Feeling you, Erin! I wear a side part to hide my grey streak and I wore my AG skinnies so much during our lockdowns that I wore a hole in the seat (!!) so I am shopping for new ones. I tried high waisted baggier jeans and I feel like an imposter in them.
It is also the way your hair grows that determines your part…and we all know it feels weird, almost “hurts” for your hair to go the other way! Gen X just needs to get real;)
