Fashion Friday: The Must Have Top for Summer

pic via Lucy Williams

I mentioned last Friday that the top that is a must have for spring/summer this year is the off the shoulder blouse.  Not a tight t-shirt style, which can look dated, but rather a loose blousy one paired with shorts or skinny cropped jeans and sandals.  It’s super feminine, great for super hot days and flattering on many body types.  Wear this kind of top with big statement earrings and bracelets, but skip the necklaces to keep from adding any business to the already interesting neckline.  Here are 12 great ones to try in a variety of prices from $20 to $375!

One of the things that keeps many women from wearing off the shoulder style is the need for a strapless bra- which has to be one of the most torturous items in the fashion world. Finding one that doesn’t slide down to your waist or give you pancake boobs or weird, unflattering lumps and bumps is so hard- especially if you are well endowed.  Here are four top rated strapless bras to try for various bust sizes:

At left is the best rated bra at Nordstrom by Wacoal (who makes awesome bras worth investing in).  At right is a nice basic style also highly rated.

A long-line style, shown at left, helps keep things on the up and up, so look for that style if the ol’ slide-down makes you insane.  At right is a minimizing style rated highly by women with larger busts (I’m giving this one a try since nursing plus strapless bras equals YIKES).

  1. Thank you SO much for including a bit on the need for a strapless bra. Honey, I feel you. In fact, the #1 reason I (personally) have avoided off-the-shoulder tops thus far is exactly that: strapless bras are the worst! On top of the discomfort, it’s also very unflattering to be hiking said bra up every ten minutes. #aintnobodygottimeforthat

That being said – maybe it’s time to give it a shot with your recommendations.

    Have a great weekend!

  2. So so so in love with the strapless blouse this season. It’s so feminine and a bit boho, which is sooo up my alley. Saw one in the recent HM catalog that I’m loving.

  3. As pretty as these are and as a woman of a certain age, I won’t be wearing this style at all. You chose some lovely examples for the younger set!! I have seen some Tibi tops that are really nice too.

    1. Boo Hoo. The only thing sadder than not being able to wear of these adorable tops is seeing a woman “of a certain age ” who doesn’t have enough sense to know that!

  4. Very “Cher” in the 70s. I remember her on the cover of TV Guide wearing a blue striped off shoulder blouse, looking fabulous.

  5. Love this look, but given my broad back, I think I would look too wide. Maybe if one side were raised higher than the other? I’ll have to go spend sometime in the dressing room I guess.

Thank you for the bra info – finding a good strapless bra that holds “everything” up without always falling back to a long line is hard to do.

  6. 100 yes’s to this post! I just got a cute off the shoulder top at the Loft and am looking for more! :) Also thanks for the rec’s on strapless bras – I usually wear a NuBra but know I need a proper strapless soon. Thanks!

  7. Not sure what sense has to do with wearing a top that gasp, bares your shoulders. Loft has a cute eyelet one with a nice length that would look good on a woman of any age. Bloomingdale’s also with a silk one by Equipment and Elie Tahari, a floral one by Knot Sisters and a lower cost one by WAYF. All would look great with white pants.

  8. I’m 5’8″ with 34E bra size after nursing two children (need i say more). I’ve tried every strapless bra out there but the Wonderbra Ultimate Strapless Bra was a GAME CHANGER. (—g-bra/?show=1&noc=1) Seriously, the girls haven’t looked that good in oh…years!

My best advice, if you haven’t already been fitted, go somewhere good and knowledgable and get fitted for a bra. Even though I’d already done that, I had someone fit me for the Wonderbra strapless because even when I thought I was in the right size, I actually wasn’t, and it made all the difference!

    1. Sorry…didn’t realise I attached a UK site above. It’s of course available loads of places Stateside, too.

  9. I have threee Tibi off the shoulder tops and looove them! Sarah – There’s a Tibi outlet?!?! Where, please? :)

  10. I had an off the shoulder Theory shirt last summer. At the end of the day, unless you are 19 years old and can go braless it’s a pretty uncomfortable item. Got rid of it after a couple of wearings. Just me, possibly.

  11. I know I am a little late but…how do you keep the neckline from popping off shoulders??? I am sure it has to be posture related.
