Gadget Get: Genius Thing for Small Kitchens

When we were renovating our kitchen my mom kept saying that having double ovens in kind of crucial.  Me being the furthest thing from a “cook” I didn’t think this applied to me, and since out kitchen is super small with little wall space we simply could not fit two ovens.

Cut to a year later and whenever I cook (and by “me”  I mean “Andrew”) I have cursed the lack of a second oven.  It’s hard to prepare baked chicken,  broiled asparagus and potato gratin simultaneously which means you have to time things down to the minute and end up spazzing out in the kitchen like your trying to dismantle a nuclear weapon.

And then my parent’s introduced me tot he best thing a small kitchen owner could ever have- the Breville Smart Convection Oven.  I was all “it’s a toaster oven, so what”.  But it’s NOT.  It’s a legitimate second oven! We had the perfect amount of space on our counter for the compact version and let me tell you, it’s amazing! You can broil veggies or meat, bake a pie or rolls, cook a small pizza, warm up food for kids without using a microwave (which as of late has been skeeving me out).  It’s seriously genius!  I thought I would hate it on my counter top, but it cuts a good profile. I have mine tucked into a corner and it somehow doesn’t visually clutter up my kitchen at all.

This would also be a fantastic gift for a college kid (it shuts itself off when time is up so no forgetful “dorm-burning-down” situations!) I love finding helpful gadgets for the home and this one shot to the top of my list!

  1. This is a great and timely recommendation as I am working on a small kitchen renovation for a client who requested double ovens and doesn’t have the space. Now I have an alternative to offer!

  2. I’ve had the compact version for a few years and LOVE it. It is a real oven and a toaster over. For a two person family I use it for daily meals often. It’s the best and worth every single penny.

  3. GE Profile makes free standing and slide-in double oven ranges that take up the same amount of space as a standard range. They also have built-in single/double wall ovens. We have this built in below the countertop, with a separate induction cooktop above it – European style. It takes up the same amount of space as a range and is smooth and clean – no crevices. We love it.

  4. I have one too and love it also. It is light weight and take it to my sister’s house every Thanksgiving so we have the extra oven there too.

  5. I bought one a few years ago and we love it. I bake cookies in mine when I don’t feel like heating up the big oven – and I agree, it doesn’t look that bad on a counter top!

  6. Oh, that is awesome! I’d love to see a pic of it in your kitchen. We hid our microwave during our kitchen renovation because I hate seeing things sitting like this on the counter. My contractor didn’t get it….or why I wouldn’t want it above the stove. Thanks for sharing!

  7. We registered for this when we got married almost 4 years ago and it is still my favorite appliance in the entire kitchen. It does everything! And like you, I don’t have room for double ovens, so this serves as my double oven. It makes me happy to see that other people love it too, because I cannot recommend it enough!

  8. Just wondering if it’s something that could be tucked on a pantry shelf while using? I have an outlet in the pantry..or does it get too hot during use? Thanks for any input!

  9. Here is another alternative to double oven:

    Microwave that doubles as convection oven. We have a triple stack from KitchenAid with microwave/convection oven, regular oven, and warming drawer. I personally would take the warming drawer over the second oven any day. A must have for any family with a spouse who works late or kids who have afternoon and evening activities (who wants to start making dinner at 7:30 p.m. after sports practice).

  10. I am so glad you posted this. Our oven just died, and we had some battles over the new oven. I wanted the slide-in double oven, and my husband complained that it made the main oven too small and wasn’t worth sacrificing that for the 5-or-so times of year we needed a double oven. So, I settled for a regular, single oven 30″ slide-in. I am actually going to get the Breville so I have that oven for the few times of year I need to crank out two baked items at once!

  11. I have the larger one and use it ALL. The. Time. If it will fit in the Breville, I use the Breville. It really cut down on how often I use the full oven – ESPECIALLY in the summer – in our little townhouse, the oven vents into the house not outside! :( LOVE my Breville SC Oven!

  12. This looks great! My second oven is actually our microwave. We bought an over-the-oven microwave that is also a convection oven. It’s nice to use when we don’t want to heat up the oven (like during hot summer days — hard to imagine now?!) and works as a second oven when entertaining. It was more than a regular ol’ microwave, but it is SO worth it.

  13. This was on our wedding registry four and a half years ago and it IS perfection indeed. Our other two top picks are the All Clad crockpot (it has a cast iron pot so that you can brown meats on the stove directly in the crockpot insert) and the Cuisinart Pressure Cooker. These three appliances (and our rice cooker) enable us to make healthy meals despite our busy lives. I can’t recommend enough.

  14. I was excited about this little oven—until I read the reviews. Apparently many people find that it quits working after 12-18 months, and neither Williams Sonoma nor Breville will replace it. So, as in all cases, caveat emptor!

  15. I don’t know who is posting about breaking, but my daughter,daughter in law and I all have this toaster oven and love it!,,,
    We use it everyday and have had for several years!

  16. We registered for one by Cuisinart from Crate and Barrel that was amazing. It lasted about 6 years. We replaced it with one by Calphalon which is not anywhere near as great but I still love how quickly it heats up and the fact that I don’t have to turn the big oven on to quickly broil asparagus or cook a snack!

  18. We had a long renovation and couldn’t have a functional kitchen oven for a while. We got the breville convection oven (regular size not the compact that you got) and seriously I was AMAZED that it could still do everything a regular oven could. I even roasted chicken in it (ok like a small 5-9lb chix, no thanksgiving dinner here!). We lived like this for 9 months and honestly never really missed the regular oven much. Now that our kitchen is up and running and we have a beautiful double oven, I still kept the counter-top convection version. It really can do everything. I guess we are a triple oven household lol.

  19. I’ve had the regular sized one for 6 years and it is still going strong. We have double ovens but I still find this to be my go to oven. I use it at least twice a day –seriously. Two thumbs up from me!
