My Daily Routine: Makeup, Skin & Hair

I have long loved the Top Shelf posts on Into the Gloss, my fave beauty blog, and so I thought I’d do one of my own! I have a few things that I buy time and time again and highly recommend.   Here they are!

1. A constant favorite- the smell and texture (and gentle nature) of Fresh’s Soy Face Cleanser is amaze. I keep this in the shower.

2. I love me a good scented body lotion (Malin + Goetz B5 is the best scent eva in my book or Aesop’s Inensive Balm) but when it comes to actually softening rough patches and moisturizing like no ones business, Amlactin is the best. Scent free and does what it says. Just don;t put it on freshly shaved legs (OUCH).

3. I know wipes don’t get your skin really clean, but when I’m super duper lazy it’s better than not washing at all! I love these Simple Radiance wipes best.

4. For body wash I love Burt’s Bee’s Peppermint & Rosemary Wash– mine is almost gone!

5. GUYS. I swear to all things holy that since I started using this activated charcoal facewash by local company Shamanuti I have not had one single pimple and my skin is crazy clear. With it’s cool consistency, black color and gender neutral fragrance I think Andrew should try it too. I am almost out and am going to get more! Also think their Pumpkin Enzyme Mask sounds super lovely for fall!

6. Also very cool and contributing my my current clear skin is this genius scrub powder from One Love Organics that you just mix in with your cleanser to create a gentle but effective scrub.

7. Another One Love Organics product (I’ve been trying to go more organic/ less chemical) is their Morning Glory Oil that I’ve been using a few drops of every day.

8. Shiseido’s Urban Shield is a constant in my drawer. Awesome non-greasy texture and killer sun protection (man do I regret all that sunbathing…. paging the LASERS.)

9. Speaking of sun spots, I’ve been using this Elizabeth Dehn Vitamin C Moisture Serum daily too.  As I said, I think lasers are my only hope, but I do feel a little brighter after a month of use!

10. Clarisonic. Duh. (Did you see it comes in leopard now???)

11. Ok, truth be told, I was sent this gorgeous Cle de Peau eye cream to try. I could not afford it otherwise. The packaging is insane on the vanity and I’ve quite liked it in the few months I’ve been using it (it lasts forever).

12.  Tweezerman tweezers to keep the brows in check between waxes.

13. Elizabeth Dehn’s Vitamin E eye cream is super moisturizing, so I use it at night!

1. I typically follow Jackie O’s rule of red on the toes, pink on the fingers. I’m not into nail art or the strange “party nail” trend.  I like things clean and simple.  I always have Essie Mademoiselle and Geranium in my drawer- and just tried the new deeper true red shade Twin Sweater Set on my toes and love it for fall. And then I go Wicked for winter when I’m pissy. :)

2. I still pray Chanel decides to bring back the fluid Teint Innocence (please please please) but until then Urban Decay’s Naked Skin in color 4.5 has been a good second choice.

3. NOTHING beats Cle de Peau concealer (I use the beige color). Nothing. I’ve tried ALL the concealers guys. All of them. This is it.

4. Currently love love loving YSL Volupte Shine Sheer Candy in Sweet Fig. Half balm, half gloss with a great taste and the perfect hint of red/pink natural color.

5. Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Bronze– I fade this out come fall in exchange for her matte bronzer in Medium.  But I like using it for nights out even in the winter.

6. Chanel’s blush in Malice has been a fave all summer. I am always buying mroe blush trying to find that perfect flush, and this is the one I use most often.

7. All summer I wore Hermes Jour de Hermes and I got so many compliments. It’s such a lovely fragrance.

8. I love me some eyeshadow palettes- none better than Urban Decay Naked 2 for variety and incredibly wearable shades (no odd colors you never use). So great for traveling!

9. Benefit Lemon-aid is an awesome eye shadow base I always have on hand. Neutralizes any red blotchiness.

10. MAC angled eyeliner brush is awesome for powder to liquid eyeliner (my fave kind).

11. Low Laura Mercier’s cake liner in Black Ebony with the brush above. Wet the brush and you get a great, flexible line.

12. Even though I love palettes, I always use up the neutral base color first- so I have a full size Laura Mercier Vanilla Nuts shadow on hand. Sometimes I also buy Bobbi Brown’s Bone instead, (would be best for paler complexions as it’s lighter)

13. Concealer is so my “stuck on an island” product- and this one has become a staple for me- Givenchy’s Mister Light in Toast. It illuminates the eye area like no ones business!

14. I used to have a massive uni-brow and while I still have thick brows, now they sometimes need a little help thanks to Father Time.  I used to use Anastasia’s Brow Wiz in Brunette but then found the exact same pencil for half the price at CVS from Salma Hayek’s line Nuance (not available online)!

15. You can tell I like this shadow, and how old it is by the shape of the container- Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Wash in Stone is SO good.

16. And I forgot to number my mascara and because I’m hella lazy, I’ll just say it’s Benefit They’re Real which is so great, clump-less and makes your lashes SO long.

And by the way, my makeup drawer is a mess. I’m not one of those perfectly organized people. No smoke and mirrors here, just messiness. :)

Ok, onto hair. For the first time in my life I’m dealing with grays and damaged hair. FUN. So I have gone from someone who had NO hair products to someone who has a drawer full.

1. I LOOOOOOVE the whole L’Oreal Total Repair 5 line. I would have photographed the shampoo and conditioner but I am out of it. I also love this masque once a week for a few minutes while in the shower! I also like to mix in Malin + Goetz Peppermint shampoo for extra deep, tingly cleaning.

2. The best hairspray ever. Says every hairstylist ever, too.

3. Bumble Surf Spray is a classic for a reason- volume, texture and beachy waves.

4. I liked this blow dry lotion for softness. Plus biotin and collagen must be good for my hair, right?

5. More L’Oreal Total Repair- the dry oil spray is so great- I put on ends before I dry or on dry hair if I’m having a super frizzy day to calm it down.

6. Another great moistuizer is Shiseido’s Essence Absolue.  Jennifer Aniston swore by it, so I bought it. It’s good stuff.

7. This is the best curling iron for loose beachy waves due to it’s lack of clip. But warning, it’s SUPER hot. My assistant got one and fried her arm.  But with practice you’ll LOVE it. Curls last forever.

Any products you simply cannot live without???

  1. Hello,
What order do you use the fresh facewash and the activated charcoal facewash and which do you use the clarisonic with? I would love to try the activated charcoal, but didn’t know if I should totally substitute the wash I use now or use both.

    Thanks! Great post!

  2. It’s nice to know that I’m not the only one who’s not into the whole nail art trend. It just doesn’t seem professional to me.

The one product I can’t live without is Lancome’s Teinte Idole foundation. It’s one of the few products that I’ve found that matches my very fair complexion and it has fantastic coverage. Plus, it lasts all day. It even survived a very sweaty mid-July wedding and the hours of photos after.

  3. Keena, I interchange the eases and use either with the clarisinic. I use the charcoal every night because it feels like it really gets absolutely everything off!!!

  4. Great post – I always love hearing about products people are using…I’m a product fiend and love to try new things! You’ve convinced me to try an activated charcoal product and have heard good things about masks. I’ve also been wanting to try estee lauder’s advanced night repair serum.

    Thanks for sharing!

  5. Thanks for the post! I also visit Into the Gloss daily and Top Shelf posts are always my favorite. CE Feluric, Retin-A and Miracle Skin Transformer are my tried and true products. I started using Brad’s Ultra Peel twice a week and love it (it’s expensive). I also like Eminence blueberry soy night recovery cream in the winter because it’s very rich.

  6. You kinda hooked me with the promise of clear skin with that activated charcoal facewash. I’ll try anything at this point. I’m getting too old to have pimples!

  7. My go-to nail polish color is Essie “Smoking Hot.” It is a dark grey with a hint of purple. Works with any outfit. I bought it at CVS.

Moroccan Oil is another product I love.

  8. I have book-marked this Erin; to try a couple of new products at a time. I love Organix products for hair! Clarisonic for skin, and Revlon anti-aging Invisible Lift base. Just for a a start!

    Feature: Entrepreneur Sigal Sasson

  9. My daily routine is very simple: wash my face with soap and water, then shampoo my hair with whatever shampoo/conditioner is on sale. It saves me a fortune and, at 59, I have the skin of a 35 year old.

  10. Are you aware of the many parabens in the Fresh soy face cleanser? I used it also, until I started paying attention. Now I wouldn’t touch it… just something to consider.

  11. I have the same Elnett hairspray and I think it smells awful! It works fine but certainly not worth the rave reviews. I’m going to go back to the Moroccan Oil hairspray, sure it costs a bit more and it works the same as the Elnett but it smells amazing and frankly chocking every morning is not my thing.

  12. Just ordered a couple items from the Living Proof hair care line……..after researching, didn’t even consider ordering trial bottles, went straight to full size.
By all accounts it sounds otherworldly.

  13. (oops)! *choking on hairspray* every morning…

Also, I too am devastated about the Teint Innocence but use the Vitalumiere Aqua as a replacement. :)

  14. I too have been trying to use more organic products, and I recommend Tata Harper (organic for glam girls). I try to look up each product I use on the EWG Cosmetics Database. I used to use several Fresh products, but, sadly, they do not score well on the toxic meter. And the Soy Cleansing Wash dried out my skin. Now I use Dr. Hauschka cream cleanser and I love it.

  15. For makeup, once I started using Bare Minerals, I never went back. I couldn’t wear regular foundation after getting used to the mineral makeup. My sister worked in hairdressing for years and used to get me this legit Moroccon oil that smelled like heaven and managed to make my wavy hair behave. When I broke the bottle in the sink, I literally used a silicone kitchen spatula to save as much of it as I could while muttering, “no,no,no,no…”

  16. Hi! We would love to send you the complete Innarah collection, it’s based on biofermentation, chemical free and it’s anti-aging. Let me know if you’re interested, it helps diminish and remove inflammation and under eye puffiness and gives back that inner glow we associate with youth.
    My best,

  17. Concealer is my desert island product, too! I’m thinking you have a trick up your sleeve since you named two. How do you use them? Are both for undereye circles?

  18. Hi Erin!

Thank you for this! You touched on some products I’ve been eyeing, but haven’t been able to pull the trigger on.

Have you ever tried Kerastase products for your hair? They’re L’Oreal’s salon brand Nd every product I’ve tried has done WONDERS for my hair.. If there isn’t a salon near by, you can find the products on their website :o) my personal favorite is their styling lotion/leave in conditioner. If I’m not blow drying my hair everyday, I’m curling it.. It’s a great base product to keep moisture in and prevent split ends!

  19. I will definitely try the Naked Skin foundation. I have been on the hunt for a new foundation ever since Bobbi Brown discontinued her original natural finish foundation.

And a few of my favs:

    – Joey Healy eyebrow powder and gel. I like the gel because it doesn’t leave your eyebrows all crusty and gross. (And if you are ever in NYC, you have to get your brows done by him. He is awesome and such a sweetheart).
    – Bobbi Brown vitamin enriched face base. I use it before my foundation. It smells amazing.
    – Blinc mascara. It stays all day, doesn’t run and won’t rub off. I generally hate waterproof mascara because it’s so tough to get off, but this stuff comes right off with warm water.
    – Fresh Farmacy soap and Tea Tree toner from Lush.

  20. Love your product post! Being a product junky myself it is always fun to see what others love. The BEST concealer I have ever used is also an eye brightener by Benefit, Boi~ing. Everyone that has tried it after me telling them about it, has thanked me for telling them. Try it you will LOVE it. I also use an cleansing oil from Lierac that I found while in Paris, love it, don’t ever think I will ever switch. Trying a new shampoo that I am very impressed with so for. L’Anza, definitely made a difference in the shine, and feel of my hair, plus smells delicious. Here is a post I wrote on products that I love…..

  21. Noticed there’s no Renova in your skincare range. You mentioned once you intend to try this. Are you using it? Or it didn’t work for you? Thank you!

  22. LOVE this post! Love getting a peek into what products you use in real life. Will definitely have to try some of these!

  23. Love this post, and going to try the charcoal face wash. I am already a fan of lots of what you recommend (Cle de Peau concealer and Mr Light is my fav concealer combo too). Is it wrong that now I want my pink Clairsoinc to die so I can get a leopard one? One recommendation I have is Armani Maestro foundation. Feels like nothing on, lasts forever, and gives a “lit from within” glow. Also SK II Facial treatment essence. So pricey but so worth it.

  24. I feel like this post was perfect timing for me. My current brown pencil is almost gone and I was planning on purchasing the Anastasia Brow Whiz. I’m so glad that you mentioned the Nuance brand as being comparable! Definitely going to be checking that out the next time I pop into CVS. Thank you!

  25. Ever heard of Neals Yard Organics? Great great products.
Also DHS has an amazing Olive Oil products…
AND last but not least Christy Harris Brow Kit is AMAZE. Try it.
    Love your post.

  26. Thanks for sharing! I love hearing products that other ladies love and recommend. Since you mention how you use products to combat the aging process I recommend you add in the routine to moisturizer your hands. Hands show age way too fast! Just get a great hand cream and put it on your nightstand. Before bed, slather it on. It will do wonders. I recommend Aveda hand lotion or from the drug store, Neutrogena. Also -every woman needs a dermatologist as a part of her skin care! Have a great weekend.

  27. love posts like these! and i am definitely going to try the charcoal cleanser — i just hit 30, but one would never know it by the amount of breakouts i have been getting…puberty strikes again. grrrr

  28. I went all natural with my beauty products a couple of years ago, and while it’s difficult to make the transition my skin is so much clearer and happier than it has ever been. Makeup was the hardest to find chemical-free alternatives to all my old favorite products, until a friend introduced me to Hourglass cosmetics. You. Have. To. Try. Them. Immediately. Their Illusion Tinted Moisturizer and Veil Mineral Primer are complete genius, and chemical-free or not I’m never going back to anything else. They are available at Sephora, and when I went to check them out the woman who helped me absolutely raved about these two products. She said she would recommend them over any other similar product in the entire store. They’ll even make you up a sample of each so you can try before you buy!

  29. Love all these! I so want a new clarisonic only because it comes in leopard! What moisturizer do you use for your face??
