Herringbone Dreams

A friend of mine posted a picture on Instagram last week of her new herringbone wood floors and I nearly collapsed in jealousy.  There is nothing I love more than a beautifully installed herringbone floor- or even better- an old one in an antique home.  Especially if that home happens to be in Paris.  You don’t see people putting these in that often anymore (the cost being prohibitive) but I swear if I ever renovate or build a home in my future, at least ONE space will have these.

Exquisite Surfaces has some STUNNING options using vintage wood!

If you can’t swing the wood floors, you can also try installing wood tiles in a smaller space like muudroom or bathroom to get a hint of the look! These are all ceramic tiles!

  1. Love herringbone flooring. My kitchen isn’t herringbone, but the tiles are laid diagonally giving a similar feel. Great for small kitchens and bathrooms.

We have them in every room in our apartment (in Stockholm you see them everywhere because of all old buildings). Love them but am longing for painted wood floors a la Mary McDonald… Gotta change it up a bit sometimes :)

My in-laws have herringbone wood floors in their (very) old New Orleans home and they are gorgeous! Definitely on my “dream house” list!

Aaahhh! You’re SO making me wish I had done these in our kids’ bathroom when we renovated (link below). The marble we used would’ve been perfect. We’re doing our kitchen next year (LOVE yours, by the way) so might have to think about herringbone in there! Love it!

Erin my dream in life would be to install aged oak herringbone patterned floors!
I think they are so stunning and have that old world look that can be decored in any way!

I had super old, gorgeous herringbone floors in one of my dorm rooms in college, and I definitely didn’t appreciate them at the time! The room also had two huge bay windows, a (non-functioning) fireplace, and two walls of floor-to-ceiling built-in bookshelves which I failed to care about. Ughh, regrets.

Question related to an old post. Do you know where I can order a couch like the gorgeous Royal/Navy sectional that was on the cover of either House Beautiful or Elle Decor (the one you posted)? I need that exact shaped couch and I have scanned the usual suspects: Restoration Hardware, PB, Williams Sonoma, etc.
Love that couch. Need it. Bad.

  8. Wow, each image is more beautiful than the next. We rented a flat in Paris and it had herringbone floors and I fell in love!

Love that BR with the gray herringbone floors. Where did you find the image?

These floors are very common in Europe particulary in convent schools, my old choir hall has this type of flooring.

  11. We installed wood-look porcelain tiles in our library downstairs and we love it! The floor really elevates the look of whole room to another level!

  12. That is, wood-look tiles in a HERRINGBONE pattern. Perhaps I should proof before hitting “submit.”

Was JUST looking at images of Herringbone floors this morning because I’ve always loved them, and they’re featured in the Canfield Casino ballroom where my friend is getting married. We were looking at images of the ballroom this morning and the floors are so distinctive.

It’s worth noting the images above are both herringbone and chevron, related but still distant cousins .

  18. Roslyn says:

Love those floors………Look as though they would be time consuming to install.

  19. I have a client (in Rome, where I live) who has these floors and they are one of my favorite features of her apartment.

I would love to have them in my own apartment. Sigh. One day.

  20. Like you I am in heaven, I adore interesting wood floors and a real love is parquet flooring.

  21. Leslie says:

i love herringbone floors, i am hoping to do one either in the front hallway or kitchen–both are narrow. hmm, on second thought, I painted my hallway with a deconstructed herringbone, not sure if that would be too busy???

I had these floors many years ago in my apartment in Paris – swoon. Love love love. Have hardwood floors now in my 99 yr old house but nothing compares to those old Paris floors, buffed to a shine….

    Beautiful pattern!

  27. I am so with you on this classic flooring choice. So gorgeous. I would love to trade down on the size of our house in order to have more money to spend on amazing materials and finishes. Some day!

  29. I completely agree, these floors are gorgeous. The whitewash/soap finish on them makes them even more beautiful. Reminds me of something from LV Wood in NYC.
