Veranda at 25: Interview with Dara Caponigro

We all know and love Dara Caponigro for being one of the founding forces at Domino.  She has now moved onto being editor in chief of Veranda Magazine- a venerable institution of good taste and old school glamour.  And this year the magazine celebrates it’s 25th year of publication and in honor of the milestone Dara is touring the country hosting events such as today’s at the Boston Design Center- a panel discussion titled, “A New Take on Tradition”  from 11 a.m. to noon (Fifth Floor, suite 548).  I got to ask Dara a few questions about the magazine and some of her favorite things!

In your opinion, what makes a space worthy of publication?
To be worthy of publication, a space needs to reflect a knowledge of what has come before, but also have some surprises.

What do you see being the biggest interior trends of the coming year?  Anything in particular you hope to never see again or what you hope to see more of?

One of the biggest trends that I see is the resurgence of pattern, but it should be done with a restrained hand. What would I like to see more of?  I would like to see people buy less, but buy better. I think people should stop obsessing with discounts and buy fewer things, but better things.


Veranda used to be a much “stuffier” publication but the content has certainly changed since you took the reigns. What tone do you hope that magazine exudes moving forward? How do you balance honoring the tradition of the old Veranda with a new look and feel?
We always strive to maintain Veranda’s DNA, which is graciousness.  But we’ve made it more timely and relevant for today’s world by being on the pulse of what’s happening in the world of style.

What’s on your wish list for fall- for both home and fashion?
Our September/October issue has a section on Italian Style. We feature a pair of black leather Marni boots with a gold heel – those have my name on them. And for home, anything from Hervé Van Der Straeten.

Veranda now covers a lot of lifestyle as well- I’d love to know your favorite hotels, trips and shops for design inspiration.

Trip: Copenhagen. Design permeates everything there, from the cups to the chairs.

Hotel: Hotel Palumbo in Ravello. I love their ironed white linens and ceramic tile. It is quintessentially Italian
Shops: MARCH in San Francisco and Gordon Watson in London for antiques

CURRENT FAVORITES:
Flower: It’s so hard to choose one favorite: garden roses, peonies, sunflowers with green centers, ranunculus.
Candle: Anything unscented.
Design Book: Vintage: “Horst: Interiors.” New: ”Miles Redd: The Big Book of Chic

Fabric: Cowtan & Tout’s new Veranda Anniversary Edition ‘Longbourne’ chintz (above). It’s the first to be featured in our new Archive Project for which we go into the archives of venerable firms and work with them to make treasures from their vaults available again.

Wallpaper: Vivienne Westwood’s Squiggle Print wallpaper from Cole & Son at Lee Jofa (above right). I put it in my coat closet and it makes me so happy every time I open the door.
Home Accessory: Elsa Peretti’s Tiffany bowls in black

Beauty Product: L’oreal Double Extend mascara
Necessary Luxury: I’m not happy without really good coffee.  I love the organic coffee from Le Pain Quotidien.
Place to Visit: My new favorite, I know, will be Cape Town. I have friends who moved there 15 years ago and they have been trying to get me to come.  We are doing a feature on Cape Town in our January/February issue, and when the images came across my desk I kicked myself for not having gone sooner. Next year is the year.

Meal to Cook: I like meals that you can cook in advance so that you can visit with your guests. One favorite is a dish that my mother makes, Chicken Marengo. It is sophisticated and delicious, but all of the work can be done in advance. My favorite dessert to make is poached pears filled with bittersweet chocolate and cream.
