Fashion Friday: Burgundy’s Back

Last year I totally would have told you that burgundy was my least favorite color and it would never, ever come back. Actually, I probably would have called it “cranberry” which still makes me a little nauseous, especially as a wall color. But burgundy sounds much more stylish, and a couple months ago I started finding myself drawn to it as it popped up on the runways. I mean, look, it’s pretty nice, right?

Paired with turquoise it looks amazing even for summer! (I cannot find the source of this bikini from Pinterest! Sorry, I wish!)

I’m not brave enough for this, but the burgundy lip is the new red lip, fo’ sho’.

Pairing this Rag and Bone dress with a bold belt or necklace (turquoise, yellow) would be AMAZING! Or start basic with this pair of JBrand skinny cords– amazing with brown leather boots and a slouchy sweater or denim shirt for fall (which will come SOME DAY!)

LOVE this Christopher Kon bag combining burgundy, black and gold. And how about these adorbs Loeffler Randall flats?

This Helmut Lang dress could be dressed down with denim jacket and gold heels (and AMAZING big earrings) for warmer weather and then with black tights and booties and a shrunken black leather jacket for winter months! That neckline makes me swoon. So does this BB Dakota blazer with leather lapels- with denim or skinny black cropped waxed jeans and heels this would be fierce.

If you have a dressy event, how insane is this Sophie Theallet dress from Rent the Runway? I’ve been dying to rent it for something!!!

The color of the season on the runway is working its way into interiors as well! Kelly Wearstler is KILLING IT with the burgundy, rose and grey colorway of her new line with Lee Jofa. I am really pretty obsessed with these two fabrics for pillows!

Check out this burgundy sofa looking all kinds of awesome (via Desire to Inspire)

How amazing does burgundy, pink and turquoise look int his oil painting of an interior by Kenny Harris. Reminds me of the Theallet dress!

Let’s not forget my favorite application of burgundy though….

Hey-yo!

  1. Somehow “that color” has more purple…or brown…or something that makes it “call out to me!!” franki (just got the jeans!) franki

  2. Bloomingdale’s recent catalog called it Oxblood. I love it, especially
Stuart Weitzman Platform Booties – Gran High Heel.

  3. I am so obsessed with this color along with “hunter green” (is hunter green even an acceptable color name anymore, I may be dating myself here) I am kicking myself for not buying these burgundy velvet tuxedo trousers last year I saw at Tory Burch!

  4. Can we call it merlot or malbec or something other than burgundy….claret…..wine…..port.
I think the name burgundy conjures up images of my old high school colors or my parents old buick.
It was burgundy with burgundy leather interiors. Ew.
Love all the images you have gathered.

  5. I just got a burgundy-esque lip color from MAC- it is seriously gorgeous and really wearable- mosey on over there when you get a chance- you might just be pleasantly surprised. Burgundy is berry’s sophisticated cousin and is actually almost easier to wear than bright red! (especially for us brunettes!). Have a great weekend- I am following your reno tweets- it’s going to be a busy one at the Gates’ household!!

  6. I am so, so happy to see this post! I bought a burgundy Vix bikini last week. At first, I was apprehensive about the color, but it was on super sale that I couldn’t pass up and with not many color choices to pick from, I tried on the burgundy. I was shocked by how much I loved the color on me! My turquoise Kendra Scott earrings I was wearing that day looked FAB with the burgundy (good luck wearing those to the pool, right?). I had buyer’s remorse when I left, since I typically go for bright blues and neons in the swimsuit department, but you have reaffirmed my decision. You’re my favorite blogger for a reason!

  7. I have always loved “burgundy” oddly enough. Actually now that I think about it my Louis the XV style writing desk has been painted in Martha Stewarts Beet Color and resembles the burgundy sofa color in your post pic. It’s my statement piece.

  8. I’m drawn to jewel tones…so funny to hear that it makes someone else cringe!

My couch and chair in my living room are a deep red. For a couple of years, they made me so happy, but then lately, I’ve wanted fresher colors. Thankfully, the solution I found (large scale artwork with many colors), provided a way to bring in brighter accents without scrapping the furniture. With that said, I’ll caution anyone about making such a bold color choice on a large piece of furniture in the future!!!

  9. Hahaha oh thank you so much for including Ron Burgundy at the end of this post (I can’t wait for the second Anchorman to come out!) And yes burgundy is most definitely back. I LOVE the Rag and Bone dress and the Christopher Kan bag!

  10. I have loved this color in years past, but right now, I’m not feeling’ it. It’s going to take some getting used to. The images are great, of course. It’s such a seventies color and we’ve been jiving the eighties most recently. I think I’ve recently given some stuff in this color to goodwill and I seriously grew up in a house with a sofa in a velvet burgundy in almost the same style as above. A total 180.

  11. Love this blending of fashion and decor! I am so into the crossover now between fashion ,decor, food, and gardening. They all connect-especially when it comes to entertaining. Grow it, cook it, serve it, and wear some fabulous shoes the whole time!

  12. Thank you for opening my mind. I see that color in fashion, and I still think “Ann Taylor LOFT” and “safe.” [Shudder] Pairing it with a bright, unexpected color is brilliant, though!

  13. I love all of this!! I’ll definitely be doing burgundy this fall, but funny enough the one thing I can’t get out of my head is yhe picture of the burgundu
y jeans with those amazing navy pointed toe heels!! Does anyone know where they’re from or know the image source? I’d greatly appreciate any help!
