Barn Raising

I have been bred to appreciate a good barn. My dad has a little obsession with barns- now whenever I see a good barn, I have to take a picture of it for him. It’s kind of a family joke, but he’s proven his obsession to be a beneficial one since he’s designed some amazing barns and buildings influenced by barns.  My parent’s garage looks like one, and then he went and built an actual red barn too right near it to house man toys (tractors, etc) and such.

Side note: He just launched his new website (designed by my brother Sean)- go check it out (including more barns)!

I came across two very different spreads featuring barns and love how they illustrate the wide variety of styles that can be housed inside one! First up is a barn influenced new home by architect Alex Scott Porter in Amagansett, NY.  A mix of vintage materials and modern sleekness it maintains an open, airy feeling while also conjuring up the feeling of a Manhattan loft.

So loving this amazing tub and the gorgeous windows surrounding it!

This “Party Barn” was found in Garden & Gun Magazine and is a classically styled barn (think hunting memorabilia, plaid and tons of wood) but it was built specifically for entertaining! All it needs is a big pool table and TV and you wouldn’t be able to get any man to leave. Ever. I love that they used the bountiful land to not only keep animals, but also their modern sculpture collection!

So sweet. I love them.

I know this is sculpture, but can you imagine being a kid and having this as a fort???

  4. Hi Erin,
I guess great minds think alike as I wrote a similarly titled post last July :) It’s nice to see some more ‘local’ barn restorations as most of the ones I’ve seen have been in the UK. Going to check out your Dad’s site right now!

    Erin,
Your fathers’ two barns are so well proportioned, beautifully detailed and classic! So wonderful to look at and must be to live with as well! I am excited to see his website. You must one day buy a fixer upper on a beautiful piece of land and you and your father will work together to do a complete remodel/ renovation.

I have also been inspired by your mother for her gardens at their beautiful home. She and I share the same garden aesthetic, drawn to the same plants and even found objects placed among them. Thank you for sharing your parents talent!

The richness and depth of color on the handsome party barn is something! Would enjoy sitting there right now with my cup of tea! Great post today!

My favorite post yet! LOVE IT – As you would say – Bananas!!

  17. Somehow our barn has turned into a haven for young skateboarders. I can’t wait to claim it for us grownups and have our own parties in there! Would love it to look like any of these — or maybe like Bunny Williams barn. New England charm at its best : )

    Hi Erin,
I grew up in Mansfield/Storrs, so some of the homes from your dad’s site are familiar. I’ve always loved the Gillard home on Gurleyville Road – had no idea who re-designed it. Your dad is truly brilliant. And so are you. I’ve been reading you since your Improper/Boston Globe articles and check-in almost everyday. Just a little fan mail. I’ve lived in Boston since 1999, but remember Tubridy’s fondly. Today’s post brought back memories. Thanks, Sara

Never even thought of barns as a living place before! I’m especially liking Alex Scott Porter’s houses – what I would do to get those high ceilings and those wooden floors… Anywho, been looking for a good fashion/style blog and found yours really nice visually and substantively. Ok, I’m off to read more of your stuff and comment on them!

I absolutely love Barns but rarely the conversions we get here in the UK. I could easily live in Alex’s one but I’d always hanker after a tradish type of party barn. These look great and your fathers work is wonderful too.
