My Emmy Fashion Review

The Emmy’s last night proved that awards shows CAN be entertaining! Between Jimmy Fallon, the hysterical voice over guy and some memorable little skits I actually found myself NOT bored.  The red carpet was a little less exciting, but still provided some good looks to review.

It was black and blue from beginning to end, and not in a bad way!  Most of these dark gowns were hits. Some may think them boring, but I always love a dark simple silhouette for a fancy affair.

The Glee girls brought their A game with navy, chic long gowns. Loving both of these with their rich color and fabulous texture.

I was shocked how much  loved Kelly Osbourne’s dress. Eva almost had a hit, but there is something off here.  I think that the applique starts at a funny point- and the earrings needed to be much bolder.

Picture 2Picture 10

Julie Bowen is too cute for words, and her gown looked fabulous and funky. Julia Louise Dreyfuss came SO close to a hit, but the sheer stomach panel nixed it for me. The earrings and silhouette are so spot on though…too bad.

These are black and blue in a bad way. And I love both these ladies. Heidi’s dress was uncomfortably short. I was actually nervous she was going to have a wardrobe malfunction during the interviews. The nacklace was too busy for the heavily textured dress too.  January Jones went futuristic AGAIN and to me it’s just ICK. She is so pretty and her hair and makeup looked awesome, but I wish she’d wear something a little more glamorous and simple.

Picture 11Picture 4

I love, love, loved Jennifer Carpenter’s one shouldered sparkly dress! I maybe would have added a bolder bracelet on that bare arm though….And Juliana Marguiles looked classy and timeless in her bedazzled sheath.

Picture 7Picture 8

Nude and pretty- both these women looked glamorous and old Hollywood and it shows how this color can look good on brunettes and blondes.

Picture 9Picture 20

Both these gowns came close to being hits- Sofia looks sexy, no doubt, I don’t think she can’t look sexy- but the sequin detail looks a smidge cheap to me for some reason. I can’t really explain it! Anna Paquin rocked some Alexander McQueen, which in some shots looked really cool, and in other looked like she was an extra on the Gladiator set….

Picture 17Picture 12

Kerri Russell’s look was SO CLOSE except for that ill fitting top! I loved the color, the loose hair, the pleating and shoes otherwise. Kyra Sedgwick made a bold statement in deep pinky red. Again, I liked the silhouette, the casual hair, the bold lip to match but that color is awfully close to my least favorite color ever- cranberry.

  1. Beautiful gowns for the most part. Heidi’s dress was ridiculous! Have a nice week, again!

You assessments are spot on! Great roundup!

  3. I thought the SAME thing when I saw Sofia’s dress. It reminds me of a prom dress or something, with glued on sequins. I agree with all your hits and misses except Kerri — don’t you think she’s a smidge casual? Looks more like a wedding or garden party outfit to me!

  4. Erin says:

I think Sofia’s look is a little too prom dress for me. But I’m convinced she can NEVER look anything but sexy and gorgeous!

  5. I always look forward to your award show recap…almost as much as I look forward to CoJo’s recap on Entertainment Tonight (pretty much the only time I watch ET now is after an award show…it is so unnecessary now with Perez Hilton filling us in every moment).

I thought Anna P.’s dress was the worst of the night, but I did not see it in ‘real life’ – I only saw it in pictures. I wonder if it looked better on film?

I don’t have a strong feel for my favorite. There were a lot I liked, but not one that I loved.

  6. I loved the Glee girls’ dresses too! I agree with you on January Jones too. The dress was horrid but the hair and makeup wasn’t bad if she had another dress. Anna Paguin’s hair was great but that dress was awful. Claire Danes was my favorite. Great recap!

  7. Man, I didn’t see Jennifer Carpenter’s look last night! I love it!

I thought Sofia’s dress looked like a prom dress. The applique was too much.

I don’t know if I’ve ever loved anything Heidi has worn. She has an odd fashion sense most of the time.

  8. Natalie says:

Erin, I was waiting all day for your Emmy review! I agree for the most part. I wish January’s dress had been tea length without the train. I think it would have looked better. And I agree with Julia Louis-Dreyfus missing the mark… I feel like I have seen her in a black gown with the same cute before. Her earrings and bracelet are to die for though! And I really want to take Keri’s dress with me to the beach this weekend! And lastly, Sofia’s dress reminded me of a bad tiger rug, where the line and stripes are symmetrical.

    Great job on the review!

  9. Mom says:

I thought Clare Danes was the most beautiful! She reminded me of Grace Kelly, she spoke so well and carried herself like she owned the place! But then again I am……approaching******** !!

  10. Sara Jane says:

Yay!! I love when you did these! I didn’t see Jennifer Carpenter last night but she looks beautiful! I wish they’d show everybody. I LOVED LOVED LOVED Claire Danes’ whole look. She looked so happy and radiant and just beautiful! I loved all the navy going on too.

  11. Lorrie says:

Heidi looks ridiculous. Too short for her age. January Jones is overwhelmed by that dress. Keri’s is too casual and Kyra too prom-ish.
I liked the 2 in navy a lot, Julie’s and Kelly.

The absolutely hilarious/disastrous is Mrs.Tom Hanks..Rita Wilson aka Mrs. Chandelier.

  12. Melissa says:

    Great post!

Wow, on first glance I thought Heidi was wearing the dress and jewels from the party store challenge this season…

  13. Julie Bown is so cute and has such a great figure- why a dress that makes her look like she has no torso and uneven boobs?

  14. I always look forward to your fashion reviews and fashion posts! As always, you nailed it. My favorite was the first two Glee girls. Gorgeous. Kelly Osbourne looks – pretty!

  15. Lindsay says:

Is it just me, or does Claire Danes look weird and not herself lately? Maybe she is too blonde?

  16. Thanks for the recap! I missed the Emmy’s unfortunately. My thoughts… ya know, since you asked:

    1) I have no idea who the brunette in nude is, but she is by far my favorite.
    2) January Jones is trying too hard to separate herself from Betty Draper.
    3) Heidi looks like she is wearing something made out of trash bags by a Project Runway contestant. WTF?

  17. Pru says:

Great review. I’m not keen on Heidi’s dress, but I quite liked the rest.

Kelly Osbourne looks like Cyndi Lauper (but in a good way!).

  18. Rachel says:

I always look forward to your award show fashion recaps, you never let us down!

  19. M says:

I love your recaps, but I thought the navy structured gowns were so tired! I feel like it’s been done numerous times the past few award shows. I loved Claire Danes’ dress and thought that Anna Pagiun could pull off the McQueen. She has such a strong look to her that I thinks he might be one of the few people who could pull it off.

  20. Kathleen D. says:

I agree with everything you said, except your opinion of Julia Louis Dreyfus’s dress. We short-waisted girls need a little optical illusion to elongate the torso. I think her dress is spot-on for her figure-type.

  21. I like Eva Longoria’s dress. But she does need some bolder accessories. And Kelly Osbourne has come a long way since the reality show!

  22. Jacquelyn says:

I LOVED Jennifer Carpenters – hated January Jones – and thought Keri Russell looked like she was trying out for Dirty Dancing.

  23. Merna Coton says:

What eyeshadow goes with blue eyes and brown hair?
