Current Obsession: Vintage Suitcases

When I saw this picture  in the new Lonny Magazine (amazing, by the way) it solidified one thing for me…

Why the HELL did I not buy the stack of gorgeous vintage suitcases I saw the other weekend at the SoWa Open Market???  ARRRGGGHHH! I was all “I dunno, they seem expensive at $65 a piece. Should I? Should I?” and then stood there for like twenty minutes doing the “I want to buy them buy my bank account will not like it one bit” dance. I finally told myself I could probably find more/better/cheaper ones at Brimfield in July when I go. But we all know that’s a load of hooey- Brimfield is shockingly expensive.

Beyond my insane non-buyer’s remorse, I have been obsessed with stacks of vintage suitcases for a while, but of course more so now that I don’t have any. Just look at these beauties! As side tables, hallway decor or even stacked on top of other furniture pieces they add such a fantastic vintage feel to any space!

Adorable other uses for vintage suitcases- as pet beds and storage for crafting supplies!

How about this bad boy lined with my fave Chenonceau print from F. Schumacher? Wouldn’t that make packing more fun?

Brilliant post. I love old suitcases too but my collection seems to have stagnated at one. I must look for some more!

This weekend we went to the Dallas Flea, and I was so tempted to buy a few vintage suitcases. There weren’t any that “had me at hello” – but I’m still looking. I love how they look stacked – especially the LV ones.

Your post has RE-fueled my love for these. Set in the right vignette, so hip vs. country cute.

  4. Ooooh, those white ones! And lined with Chenonceau – brilliant!

I just love vintage suitcases. They make me dreamy about the adventures they’ve been on!

If you’re interested, I’m hosting a giveaway for a Wendy Mink necklace (retail value: $175), drop by!

  6. Love all these images. I use vintage suitcases to store supplies in my home office, and at our beach house, use them on top of an armoire, along with a vintage hatbox. My newest obsession is vintage doll suitcases. Found two at a junk shop in Tipp City, Ohio.

  7. I love my vintage suitcases. At the moment I’m using them as a side table next to the desk in my office. I’m always keeping my eyes open for different ones at local garage sales. Tres chic and functional – can’t beat that!

  8. I love that you can take something as cool looking as vintage suitcases and recycle them to make them decorative or functional. I bet you could use a three-stack as storage for make up, hair and jewelry. Just put it right next to the bed.

I love vintage suitcases! I actually have one of the red/yellow striped ones at home. Where did you find this photo? I would love to find out more about the one I have.

Secret source for vintage suitcases: VW car shows. Those boys (and some girls) like their vintage accessories for their vintage car roof racks. If there are any in your area this summer (surely there will be) you could go look for the people selling…most definitely cheaper then Brimfield, plus you’ll get to see some cute lil cars.

  11. Lisa says:

Ooh, the Chenonceau print looks fabulous inside that suitcase! I’ve seen the dog beds before and I was thinking I needed to make one for my little pups. Too cute!

  12. Meg says:

I almost bought some at an antique mall last week which were $195/each, and I thought those were cheap! Yours were a great find! Get them! Oone of hte ones I liked was wicker, love the texture!

  13. Sarah W says:

Oh that Chenonceau print lined one is just the bee’s knees! I see fresh white towels in it in a bathroom.

LOVE vintage trunks as nightstand – great post!

  15. Bridget says:

I’ve found six great suitcases at Boston thrift stores – they are all great!

  16. BB Woo says:

I love vintage suitcases! I think they are the most unique and chic way to create some serious, practical storage. They’re great. Thanks for sharing all those beautiful images!

  17. Nuit says:

oh I agree!!! they are stunning!!!

  18. Torie says:

Great post! I use my collection of vintages suitcases for storage of bed linens. Works perfectly. I have found mine at thrift shops and antique stores. Some I even inherited from my parents. Their first sets are now wonderfully retro!

  19. GB says:

:) I’ve been drooling over these for quite a while now…love the post.

  20. Oh my, oh my. You just gave me the idea I needed to finish up my guest room. Vintage suitcases! Every thrift store in the world has at least a half dozen for 5dllrs. I’m on my way!

  21. Sonya says:

What a great idea for a pet bed! I love it! And I don’t think it would be hard to get my dog to use it- everytime we’re packing for a trip and have the suitcase open, he hops right in (maybe giving not-so-subtle hints that he doesn’t want us to go?). Much cuter and loads more unique than just a doggie bed from Tarjay thrown on the floor.

  22. Aren’t they too cool? I have been collecting them for three years now…I have about twenty in the loft, four decorating the living room ,one in the little ones room and a couple in the dressing room. you were right not to pay that price though…too expensive. I’m sure you’ll find more though, they’re everywhere at the moment!

  23. I just adore the pet bed idea! Although I’m not so sure I’d be able to get my cats to go for it. Everytime we pull a suitcase out to pack, they “panic”, knowing we’ll be gone for a few days.

  24. Katie says:

I had no idea suitcases could be such cute decor!

  25. I have found great vintage suitcases at thrift stores for a lot less than $65. Just look next time you’re nearby one and maybe you’ll luck out. Then you and your bank account will both be happy :)

  26. Christina says:

I love your post! These images are fabulous. I’ve been in love with the vintage suitcases for awhile and looking for every excuse to buy some. :)

  27. These are fabulous – we have a few in the garage right now from my husband’s grandmother that can be put to good use – I did just read somewhere that Target has a vintage set right now

  28. Nestegg says:

I’ve been loving the vintage suitcases for a while now too. Can’t seem to shake it! Great idea with the pet beds. Surely you’ll come across some more soon. Great post! xoRH

  29. Cecilia says:

I have this one vintage suitcase in my office at work that I keep a stack of books I want to read on. They are lovely! Thanks for sharing these beautiful pictures. :)
