Fashion Friday: If I Were An Oscar Stylist

The Oscars are this Sunday and since I am such a fierce critic of what comes down the red carpet, I thought I’d give styling a try. It is SO much harder than I thought…. but I gave it a go!

I’d love to see Sandra Bullock rock out this Monique Lhuillier number with big gold/amber chandelier earrings and cocktail ring.

06m

Carey Mulligan would look divine in this Lhuillier gown with understated, ethereal detail (paired with a bold necklace)

14m

Anna Kendrick in Elie Saab

00240m

Penelope Cruz in Elie Saab OR Oscar de la Renta’s hot red number (sans jacket). I can’t decide.

00140moscar1

Maggie Gyllenhaal in Naeem Khan (I adore this dress to DEATH. Ok, I adore just about everything he makes)

Picture 4

Director Katherine Bigelow in J.Mendel (she is so pretty and I’d want her to look bold and confident when going up against her jackass ex James Cameron- Avatar was awesome, but he’s such an ego maniac.)

04m

This Carolina Hererra on someone like Anne Hathaway

00280m

More Monique Lhuillier- this one for Mo’ Nique (She’ll win and winners need  happy color!)

00230m

Nicole Kidman would be perfect in this Alberta Ferretti number:

00370m

Zoe Saldana would kill it in this sparkly violet grey Badgley Mischka!

BM

Melanie Laurent from Inglorious Basterds in Badgley Miscka

00120m

Marion Cotillard in this ridiculously dramtic and awesome Christian Dior.

CD

Amy Adams in this deliciously detailed J. Mendel

00280m

Diane Kruger in Badgley Mischka

00150m

Angelina Jolie in nude Donna Karan (paired with blinding statement necklace and killer shoes).

00360m

Meryl Streep in Donna Karan (plus tons of multistrand cream pearls!)

00230m

Julianne Moore in Donna Karan (paired with big emerald green earrings)

46m

Kate Winslet in Carolina Hererra

oscar2

Helen Mirren in Naeem Khan

00220m

Sigourney Weaver in Oscar de la Renta

00470m

Halle Berry in Naeem Khan

  18. The Naheem Khan dresses are so glam! Gorgeous. Also love the first Lhullier.

I think it was InStyle picked the Elie Saab you have here for Anna Kendrick for Vera Fermiga, I think the dress is beautiful and would look beautiful on both actresses!

I also think the colour of the J. Mendel would be gorgeous on Amy Adams, but is she still pregnant? I’m not up to date on my celeb baby births!

    Girl, You are right on!!!

  37. Jana says:

While it’s true that James Cameron seems or can seem arrogant – there is no bad blood between him and Katharine. Everyone knows this, even the feminist blog Jezebel.

    Here’s a link:
    http://jezebel.com/5451705/james-cameron–kathryn-bigelow-used-to-be-married—-get-over-it

  38. Liz says:

“But for anyone searching for a storyline in a muddled year, exes facing off is as sexy of a meme as any. (As was, to a lesser extent, Nancy Meyers’ commercial success over her Alfie-creating ex-husband and former collaborator.) That’s despite all evidence that Cameron and Bigelow, who were married from 1989-1991, remain friends and that he was a booster even before he obligingly gave her props in his Golden Globes acceptance speech. As Michael Musto put it in The Village Voice on January 7,

Alas, though I’m desperate for their golden competition to turn into the most bitter battle royale since Olivia deHavilland and Joan Fontaine, there seems to be a frightening amount of good will brewing here. In fact, Cameron and Bigelow are friends (Their split was way back in 1991) and he’s even the one who advised her to direct The Hurt Locker when she was focusing on some other project!”

  39. perfect! Much better than what will probably be on the ladies.

  40. Kimberly says:

I love your website and this is my first comment- I have to say that I absolutely adore your oscar dress “predictions!”. That was such a best of the best collection that I feel like watching the outfits these guys actually do come up with will be a little disappointing = )
You rocked it! Thanks for that awesome post = )

  41. Vanessa says:

I absolutely LOVE these! The only one I’m not totally on board with is Kate Winslet’s…I just can’t see her in it. The rest are right on target though! Can’t wait to see what they actually choose :)

  42. Rachel says:

Wow, I love your choices, they are so spot on! I can completely see Zoe Saldana & Diane Kruger in those Badgley Miscka dresses and fantastic choice for Nicole! Great post :)

  43. Danielle says:

Looove the Monique Lhuillier dress and Marion Cotillard would shut it down in that Dior gown.
    Great choices!

  44. lori says:

For some reason, I can’t see all of the dresses (especially the one that’s your favorite!) I tried on Safari and Firefox … on a Mac. Eeek! But all of the other dresses were great, and spot-on. My only change? Even though Angelina Jolie’s beige dress was very “her” right now, I’d still prefer more color and a different look than “drapey fabric” on her. It seems like that’s all she wears to events!

  45. Natira says:

After seeing this post I was left so underwhelmed with the actual red carpet stylings. Beautiful work!

  46. Suzanna says:

I love your picks! Right on the money!

  47. Meg says:

Unfortunately, I did not see this before the Oscars aired, but I am compelled to comment on the thoughtlessness of these picks. You’ve matched dresses based entirely on a style that each of these starlets have previously worn on the red carpet – how boring?! I’m a huge fan of your blog and your style ideas, but I thought this post fell short; in the name of style, it was too safe and lacked creative insight. While undoubtedly classy and pretty, if these looks showed up on the red carpet as you suggested, it would’ve triggered quite a yawn on Oscar night (with an exception of your pick for Sandra Bullock, I think that would’ve been an excellent trade).

  48. Kimberly says:

I actually loved a lot of your picks, and I want to give it a try next year:) Thanks for a fun post (even though I didnt get to see it before). Oh and I think a few of your picks were very close to what some of the acresses did in fact wear. Good job. I cant remember who, but someone did wear that J Mendel dress. I also loved your pick for Jolie and Mirrem. Fun stuff.
