Cut It Out

I always announce that I “hate Valentines Day”. I don’t know why because that’s a lie. I secretly love Valentines Day. Flowers and chocolate and pink and red…what’s not to love? Sure, it’s a commercialized holiday and kind of bullshit, but there is something just lovely about having a day full of frivolity and hugs. This year I’m planning a very small dinner party for a few time-tested couples instead of a night out alone with the hubs.  Inspired by Julia Child’s Valentine’s parties in Paris, I plan to cook something fabulous, serve lots of pink bubbly, decorate so it looks like Valentines Day threw up all over my dining room (more on that later) and just celebrate. I am probably the least mushy, sappy, lovey-dovey girl alive (just ask Andrew) so I can’t deal with staring into someone’s eyes while they read me poetry. I start gagging and giggling. Which is why I am LOVING these Valentines cards by Storey Shop. Funny, hand crafted, modern day proclamations of love! A bit pricey, but like little works of honest art!  The best part? You can customize them if you don’t see one that suits you.

For me, they might read:

“I love you more than my Blackberry”

“I love you more than blogging”

“I love you more than Twilight”

“I love you more than yoga”

” I love you more than Elle Decor”

This one actually suits me really well too:

This one would be great for my brothers to give their ladies. Also available in “Xbox”:

There is no better card made for my Dad to give my Mom than this:

And for her to give him back:

Appropriate for just about every girl I know:il_430xN.109201081

I also know a few people that these would suit really well:

These are brilliant – thanks for profiling them! Need to order some now :-)

  2. Adorable. These are great. I am right there with you — I am not a mushy girl at all. Don’t get me wrong, I love when my husband does nice things for me but the all-out mushy stuff is a little too much to take.

One year while we were still dating I bought my husband this card:

Thankfully he gets my sense of humour.

  3. A Valentine’s Day dinner party sounds lovely!

As far as cards (in general), I like getting blank ones and writing my own thing. It’s the only time it seems to turn out just right. And I’ve told my husband that if he ever gets me a card with a cartoon animal or some sort of stuffed toy, that he’s out.

Such a lovely idea to throw a dinner party! That was one of my favorite parts of Julia Child’s book (and the movie “J&J”)–seeing those fantastic V-day cards that she and her husband made to send to their friends all over the world.

I think I’ll be ordering that shoes & bags card since my husband makes fun of me all the time for my retail addictions!

I love those~ too cute! I’m with you on the whole commercialized part of the holiday, but I can’t deny my love for chocolate AND flowers.

  6. Those are brilliant! And they definitely are little works of art – I’d frame one! Couldn’t agree more about your ideas – more than blogging, more than Twilight… thanks for featuring these!

That is exactly how I feel about Valentine’s Day, pink in red and everyday decorating is hard to do (unless you are Miles Redd obviamente) but it is such a fun, happy, combination. The thing I HATE about Valentines Day (and I have no reason to hate it, my fiancee has been my valentine for the last 6 years I am a lucky girl) is going out! It is such a forced awkward evening. Last year we went to this supposedly hip restaurant in Chicago where they had crammed in 1000 2 person tables and it was basically like speed dating. Hor.Ib.Le. Can’t wait to see what you do with your dinner party! And love these cards!

Please do a post on your V-Party planning! What food are your serving? Flowers? China?

Awesome cards! I am so with you on the not mushy part. I try so hard not to giggle, but I can’t help it. And if hold the giggle in, eventually it becomes a very large spluttering guffaw, which is even more insulting :)

These are amazing, love them. I like the idea of being able to personalize them. I have a fun color test on my blog today, that you might enjoy taking. I am Green, I would love to know what color you are??!! Kathysue

  13. Your Husband says:

I wish I could beleive that you love me more than all these things…but I suspect that I play a backseat to many of them.

Also, don’t think it went unnoticed that “I love you more than my dogs” was not even considered…

That was one of my favorite scenes in Julie & Julia! I loved the oversized Valentines she had everyone wear at her party. I love the idea of sharing v-day with other couples, seems like such a chic thing to do…another sign of being a grown-up I suppose! :) How fun and I love these cards!

  26. holly says:

Oh my husband would crack up at the I LOVE YOU MORE THAN ETSY card…Sometimes I think he wonders if I have a secret etsy boyfriend out there. So, if I gave him that card he might question my sincerity :-) might have to give it a shot. Thanks for the post.
