Wrong Side of the New Bed

I woke up in a funk.

Even after my first night on my new KING bed- finally, my 5′9″ self, 6′4″ husband and pair of small pups can all have our own SPACE. But the memory foam mattress smelled like chemicals and it kept me up thinking about the potential damage it was doing to my lungs. Yup, real headcase type stuff.

So all day I’ve been an Eeyore. Moping and whining and all “woe is me” with a little rain cloud following me around. Not even yoga pulled me out of it. I just spent a few (like 60) minutes trolling deepy, quote laden blogs like Thresca, where I pulled these lovely pics with quotes from. What is it about quotes that make one feel understood? At least the make ME feel understood.

Anyways, I need to get it together. “Funk” is not a good color on me.

Not to be alarmist, but I may actually look into returning the memory foam mattress… my husband and I had one for two years, during which I developed some horrifying auto-immune issues and had horrible, untreatable acne for the first time in my life. After doing hours upon hours of medical research, I finally realized it could be the mattress. We replaced it, and my medical issues quickly extinguished. On the other hand, I believe they are almost fully off-gassed within a few months; if you have the luxury of storing it in a garage or storage space until then, that may be safer, too. Anyway, you’re not a headcase! :)

For what it’s worth, my husband and I got a Tempurpedic mattress in January. The first night or 2 it gave off some odd fumes but after that they were gone, or at least we didn’t notice them. We love the mattress, my hubby’s sore back is gone and I love not getting stuck by stupid springs. My vote is not to give up on it just yet.

Our queen was a memory foam (the same knock off Tempurpedic this one is) and we’ve loved it. So I’m not really worried about it, just being a FREAK. :)

I am having one of those days too, ugh.

I don’t know what we would do without a king size bed. even though i am only 5′3 my husband is 6′7. It is so very nice to be able to have space.

Ok, you are amazing Erin. I just saw that you put back the ‘E of S Guide to Boston’ on your blog. Thank you, Thank You!!! I sincerely mean that and certainly was not expecting you to do it so quickly or do it all for that matter. I’m sorry you are in a funk, been there, I think it happens to all of us. Have a glass of wine, a cocktail, or call your best friend who will probably make you laugh!

Erin – Your story – I had that same issue a month ago. Same bed, husband, dog, fumes, etc. Our fumes are gone, thank god, but I would stay up picturing us all getting cancer in that bed from the fumes! It’s ridiculous how out of our minds we can become! Focus on the positive (I know I am) – that in less than one month, New Moon will cheer us all up.

I love quotes as well – I think they’re comforting because they make you feel like there’s someone else out there who feels exactly the way you do. Which is always comforting when you’re feeling down and like no one understands.

Replace small pups with one 9 year old child who sneaks into our bed in the middle of the night! UGH…We’ve had our king bed for over a year and I think no matter what type of bed you buy, it takes some getting used to. I did toss and turn, but now find it very comfy. I wonder if you could try an aromatherapy spray on your sheets to help with the odor? Btw, I love your blog!!

  9. I could’ve written this myself when we got ours. But after a few days, the smell was gone and I am glad to report we are all sleeping soundly.

Boy oh boy it must be the weather because I was definitely having the same kind of day yesterday mostly relating to bed issues as well! I was described as being very glum yesterday so I feel your pain Erin! My boyfriend and I recently purchased a new queen size bed after shopping for 3 months to find a compromise bed! He likes soft beds and I like firm. We settled on a cushion firm, and 4 months into our purchase, I sleep terribly now and wake up with a stiff back every morning. I hope night two went better for you!! Anyone have any suggestions as to how we might be able to fix our bed issue? Buying a new one isn’t really an option at the moment unfortunately. Good call on buying a king though, buying a queen was our first mistake! :)

Ashley- I feel YOUR pain (and yours too Erin!)- my husband and I totally have different taste in mattresses. We got a SleepNumber bed so we can each adjust our own side- it worked! Plus, it being adjustable was a huge help when I was oh-so-uncomfortably pregnant…
