Emmys Superlatives

Admittedly, I did not watch the Emmy’s. I had more fun plans last night. However, you know this morning I jumped right online to check out who wore what.  Seems like it was an underwhelming red carpet, but I of course have to chime in with my thoughts on this chilly Monday morning!  So here we go, the Elements of Style Superlative Awards for the 2009 Emmys:

Most Likely To Make Me Blindingly Jealous of Her Best Accessory: Jennifer Westfeldt
I don’t even notice her dress. Or her. Just Don Draper. Hello.

Most Likely to Be Beamed Up Off the Red Carpet: January Jones
One of the most beautiful women in Hollywood in my opinion, and she wears this Star Trek looking number?? Reason # 101 that I think I could easily be a Hollywood stylist….

Most Likely To Have Been the Work of Rachel Zoe: Debra Messing
Classy, colorful and fits amazing. I adore this. I die.

Most Likely To Try REALLY HARD to Look Like Natalie Portman: Ginnifer Goodwin
The pixie hair, the color of Natalie’s last big red carpet dress….hmmmm. I hate the fit of this dress, it’s so unflattering. But I do love her.

Most Likely To Win My Heart Even Though She’s Wearing A Sheer Stomach Panel: Christina Applegate
Really not loving the zebra sheer panel on this, but the neckline is stunning. And she cracks me up, on top of being a classy, amazing woman. So I forgive her fashion trespasses.

Most Likely To Have Been Good in Theory and Kinda Blah on the Red Carpet: Rose Byrne
She looks so young and so washed out in this dress (which is independently, a beautiful number). I think an Eva Mendes type skin tone would look best in this pale flesh color.

Most Likely To Make the 8th Month of Pregnancy Look Chic and Amazing: Heidi Klum
Not. fair.

Most Likely To Be On Trend: Chloe Sevigny
This one might strike up a debate. I love it. The polka dots are so on trend and the lines of it are amazing (not to mention the brooch). Since seeing her oft blogged about entryway, I have a new appreciation for her style so I allowed my mind to open on this one.

Most Likely To Fit Impeccably: Sandra Oh
Simple and stunning, this is how you do “nude” right. One of the best dressed of the night.

Most Likely To Make My Eyes Bleed: Melora Hardin
Reason # 102 of why I could be a Hollywood stylist. She likely paid someone to pick this out for her and it’s one part Beauty and the Beast and one part sale rack in the Lord & Taylor evening department.

Most Likely To Join the Icecapades: Olivia Wilde
No. No. No. No.

Most Likely To Be the Reason Our Husbands Don’t Mind Watching the Red Carpet: Blake Lively
She definitely is working from the J. Lo playbook, but pretty much rocks the carpet. Except for the braid. The braid is way too Lara Croft/Tomb Raider.

Most Likely to Be A Hot Mama (Even With that Bow): Mary Louise Parker
The bow is a bit big, but I just think she is so confident and sassy that she can wear it well.

Most Likely to Be My New Favorite Wedding Dress: Perrey Reeves
First off, how cool is her name? Secondly this is my favorite dress of the night. AMAZING. I love the cut, the beading, the little cap sleeves. If I were to have another wedding, I’d wear this with a white peony tucked into a low bun and call it a DAY.

Most Likely to Sneak Outta Left Field and Kill It: Guiliana Rancic
I hate to admit it (since I find her so annoying) but she always looks good on the red carpet. But this dress is flawless.

Most Likely To Be Going to the Junior Prom: Jennifer Love Hewitt
Too sweet for my taste.

Most Likely To Have Mixed Runway and Reality Well: Lindsay Price
My second favorite dress of the night- the draping, the colors, the one shoulder with the brooch.  Very funky but yet flattering and fabulous.

Most Likely To Be Hallucinating: Drew Barrymore
Too nude for me. And she always comes off like she’s pre-gamed a little too hard.

Most Likely To Be Random Sparkly Goodness:Anna Torv
The color and the cut are so, so lovely!
Most Likely To Look WAAAAAAY Older Than She Is: Leighton Meister
This makeup job makes her look old! And the dress is frumpy, in my opinion. A big no.
Most Likely To Make Me Laugh and Jealous of Her Dress: Julia Louise Dreyfuss
She’s always a sly one, making you laugh with her amazing comic timing and them shocking you with her killer body and classy gowns on the red carpet! The peacock blue is delicious.

Most Likely To Be On the Fence: Toni Colette
I’m so undecided on this one. Love the pink, love the shape and texture of the dress- but not sure if I like them together!

Most Likely To Need to GIVE IT A REST: Kim Kardashian
You have a J. Lo booty. We get it. Stop posing like that. Uggggghhhhh.

Most Likely To Be the “Best Draped”: Jaimee Lynn Sigler
Like liquid gold. Quite stunning!

Most Likely To Judge You: Kara DeGuardia
I love this look- the unique dress, makeup and hair all work really well. I vote yes.

Most Likely To Want To Pick Her Up and Put Her in Your Pocket: Kristin Chenoweth
So tiny yet so fierce! Love this sassy little sparkly number-it so suits her personality!

Your thoughts?

IMHO, best dressed: Sandra Oh, Kate Walsh (great makeup!), Debra Messing, January Jones (she's so pretty and dress really suits her although it is a bit weird but she is so gorgeus in it, love that mint green colour), Lindsay Price, Leighton Meester, Marie Louise Parker. Hayden Panettiere looked so much older than her age and I really don't like dots on Chloe (or anyone else). I just don't like them on glamourous gowns. I think Blake Lively looked gorgeous and wore it great.

  2. Greet says:

My thougt is that you did a lot of work on your post! Thank you so much for sharing these pics!
    Gorgeous!

    Greet

    I heart your review.

I almost cried when I saw Heidi Klum – I'm 7 months pregnant and only wish I looked even remotely that good LOL.

Totally agree with you on Leighton Meester, Drew Barrymore, Gennifer Goodwin (who I normally love cause she's just so darn cute), and Olivia Wilde (Oksana Baiul called and wants her dress back).

Dresses and women who made me cry (tears of envy): Blake Lively, Kate Walsh (I just want to be her), Sandra Oh-my-God-she-looks-perfect, Christina Hendricks (ok, maybe I don't adore the dress, but I do adore her curves!), Debra Messing, January Jones (gorgeous despite the strange dress, but her body is perfection, so…), and Lindsey Price – oh so pretty.

Dresses and women that made me cry (from the pain): Kyra Sedgewick (can we say grandma frump?), Hayden Panettiere (what was that?!), Christina Applegate (cause I know she can do better), and Mila Kunis (vampire prom queen, anyone?).

I love this post – you crack me up!

  4. The Countess of Nassau County says:

    I DIE over this post.

When you gushed over Anniston's prom-like Oscar get-up (sorry) I wasn't sure our "style" was made up of the same "elements". I now see that they most definitely are. The Melora Hardin comment is so utterly perfect. And that Kardashian broad – please just join the Pussy Cat Dolls already.

Thank you for giving a nod to Perry Reeves, proof that a great fit and a great body don't need much to shine, she was one of my favorite looks of the night.

  5. karlene says:

my favorite dress of the evening was also, Perrey Reeves stunning and delightful, all in one. I thought Toni Colette looked beautiful! I was saddened by Blake Lively's dress. She is such a beautiful young lady, and in so much press all the time, why the need to go there.

  6. iva says:

I just saw Jennifer Carpenter's dress and LOVED it!

  7. Sarah (Matters of Style) says:

Speaking of Jennifer Westfeldt's accessories, did you see that BLING on her ring finger? Is she engaged to Don Draper?

  8. Sam says:

What an amazing round up here. Hilarious – definitely giggling out loud here. I loved January Jones dress – it had a real forward thinking edge to it. I can appreciate that..

    xx,
    Samantha

  9. Emily says:

Hilarious that you said that about Perrey Reeves dress because I saw it and said the SAME thing. As a bride-to-be, i LOVE that shape!

  10. Caryn says:

Absolutely love Sandra Oh, Perrey Reeves, and Anna Torv. DIE!

Leighton Meester made me want to scream. Isn't she an "it" girl right now? What is she doing in that frumpy thing?

And Don Draper. What a tall drink of water that man is. Good GOD.

  11. Alaina Kaczmarski (Live Creating Yourself) says:

It is amazing how different dresses look photographed and how they looked on screen (I thought Drew Barrymore looked quite lovely on screen).

As for Olivia Wilde's dress – I loooove it and did not notice the figure-skating angle until you mentioned it. I still think she looked gorgeous like always.

Also – Toni Collette looked pretty fab on screen. Plus she was tanned and toned which made her look that much better (my first exposure to Toni Collette was as the frumpy Harriet Smith in the movie Emma). She's a fantastic actress.

  12. Annie says:

Okay, seriously, best accessory: Don Draper. Holy. Moly.

On Toni Collette's dress: it's actually a very soothing deep apricot color. Oh so gorg with her red hair. Here's a link (http://www.people.com/people/package/article/0,,20304925_20305842,00.html?xid=rss-topheadlines). I saw her in it as she stepped up to accept her award and she was STUN. NING.

    :)

  13. Hillary says:

I think January Jones tries to go for the "anti- Betty Draper" look at award shows, which I can understand. Last year, she was all about the Grecian Goddess. This year, she seems Star Trek via the Empire State building (too futuristic and art deco for me).

Sandra Oh really came through for me.

  14. Beth Gales says:

Thanks for the funny and imformative way to keep those of us who couldn't watch informed! Love Sandra Oh too!

  15. Brandi says:

Your post made me laugh so much.

I die for Debra Messing's dress too. She's incredible.

I think one of the reasons I like to watch the red carpet for the emmy's is because it's so interesting to see the fashion disasters. Like Leighton Meester. I love her, she's awesome, but Why that dress, Leighton? WHY??

  16. Anonymous says:

Kate Walsh totally deserves best dressed in my opinion, and Chloe Sevigny made my list from the neck down; however, she as ususal never seems to get the hair and makeup just right. I actually get the fashion forward look of January Jones, and Lindsay Price has never been photographed in anything but perfection.

  17. Jaime says:

Haha, love your superlatives! They are dead on :)

Missing for me- Kate Walsh, loved her dress and she sported a $30 Aldo clutch! Most likely to appeal to the masses? :)

PS: check out my blog for a giveaway!

  18. Things That Inspire says:

Oh, thank you for this – I didn't watch either, but always love the Entertainment Tonight recap the next day. This might have been better…

I thought Signourney Weaver looked amazing. The thought that ran through my head: she is 20 years plus older than me, but looked AMAZING in her dress.

  19. livingwithstyle says:

Too Funny! I love Kristin Chenoweth's dress — and Sandra O's – overall though not very impressive.

  20. Anonymous says:

totally agreed with everything EXCEPT for January Jones. I loved that dress. Its so art deco! love it. Plus, i think it's very figure flattering and unexpected.

    :) very funny post.

dude, Leighton, easy on the makeup. she needs a stylist bad.

  21. LW says:

I agree with Alaina that some of these dressed looked way better on TV than in these photos. I think Drew Barrymore, Toni Collette and Rose Byrne's dresses were all more flattering in motion and on-screen.

And I loved January Jones's dress! It was so interesting and not as "safe" as some of the others (Julia Louis-Dreyfus is consistently gorgeous, but so … consistent!) and she has looks and body to rock something that would look terrible on someone else. My only complaint was the skin panels. They definitely give me pause.

    And Don Draper as accessory=YES!

  22. Rebecca says:

You make me laugh out loud. I pretty much agree all around. I give Sandra Oh best dressed. Absolutely stunning.

  23. LD says:

What a great rundown! I agree with you on pretty much everyone…except I did love Toni Colette's dress…I know you are on the fence about it!

I also thought Leighton Meester looked way too "done-up" and I said the same thing when I saw Rose Byrne…too blah, what was she thinking?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for the photo of Jaime Lynn Sigler…I hadn't seen her yet! Loved her dress!

  24. Mimi says:

My favorites…Debra, Chloe and Blake. Soooo hot!
    Loved this post..Lol..Funny!

  25. Anonymous says:

Did you see Nancy O'Dell (Access Hollywood)? OMG. Love your blog. You crack me up everyday.

  26. mb says:

Well, I am glad I read your post before going to the paper to see what everyone wore.
You nailed it… the good, the bad, the pregnant. You got it right, except I didn't like your second favorite dress with the broach. Purple and black don't do it for me when they are paired together.

    Thanks for the fabulous post.

  27. Kristen says:

Loved Rose Byrne's dress but not on her. She was darling in Adam though…

  28. Paula Grace Designs says:

Hilarious! Best review I have read on the red carpet :)

  29. Jana Marie says:

I found the red carpet SO underwhelming also…I was pretty disappointed. There were some I really loved though.

  30. Jessica says:

I loved this! Thank you for making me giggle all through my morning coffee. :-)

  31. Naomi says:

great round-up! You crack me up. I agree- Lindsay Price and Perry Reeves were the best. I always love Mrs. Ari's clothes on Entourage.

  32. Anonymous says:

    Favorite—Debra Messing

Someone lied to her— Leighton Meester (pretty girl, but what was with the kleenex shoulders?)

Honorable Mention— Kyra Sedgwick (not pictured) but I thought she looked amazing.
Blake Lively (not anyone could wear that dress and look that good)

    Sandra Oh, looked flawless too.

  33. Jessica says:

I thought Debra Messing looked boring and I liked January Jones deco dress.

  34. Olivia Taylor says:

    LOVED this post!

As for Blake Lively's braid being "a little too Lara Croft, Tomb Raider:" I swear I had the EXACT same thought while watching this on tv the other night!

  35. ACCIDENTAL Chic says:

FYI Rachel Zoe did not dress Debra Messing, Michael Kors did. Debra is still a client of Rachel's though.

Oh, the things you find out on twitter!

  36. honey living says:

love love love this post. thank you!

  37. Stash says:
