What I’m Loving:Cy Twombly

I have grown to really appreciate the depth and texture that modern, abstract art gives an interior space. Whether that space is modern itself or traditional, non-representational works can really add that missing “punch” you’ve been looking for. One of my favorite artists of abstract art is Cy Twombly. Now I know, none of us are going to be purchasing a Cy anytime soon, but his work might inspire you to consider a piece you may not have before. Some of you may say “it’s just scribbles, Erin, my 4 year old could d that!”- well, then get a huge canvas and let your 4 year old do it- it may turn out amazing and be just what your dining room needs to wake it up! :) I also will maintain that abstract painting is the HARDEST type of artwork to do, so I can appreciate the genius in these works- having tried to do some myself!

Here are some snaps of Cy’s work in interiors- from the VERY traditional to the sleek contemporary…

And some of my favorites:

A client showed me the piece above (from the Art Institute of Chicago’s current Twombly exhibition) as a color scheme inspiration and I found a local art gallery who sells Bridgette Brugemann‘s work- which has a similar feel (I am in love with them!)

I love Twombly's work. I use to work at the Art Institute of Chicago and their Modern Art department is awesome! They do the best temporary exhibitions. I was in Museum Education department and they had the most amazing Gerhard Richter exhibition when I was there. I still flip the the book from that exhibition at least once a month and it had a permanent place on my coffee table.

I'm such a fan of his work…we're lucky enough in Houston to have a whole gallery dedicated to his work! http://www.menil.org/collection/CyTwomblyInDepth.php

Need to appreciate and learn more about Cy Twombly. I just remember in college going to Philly Museum of Art. They had a room devoted to his work. It was not my favorite – reminded me of a mental institution. I love abstract art. Esp Lucio Fontana. But Twombly's work looks amazing in a home. I think that's pretty cool and changes the work.

Honestly, not a huge Twombly fan, though I agree with you that modern art is a great counterpoint to traditional furniture.

I love Cy Twombly. Every time I am in London, I head over to the Tate Modern to look at his 4 seasons series – so beautiful.

There was a Cy Twombly on the cover of Veranda last year, paired with French and Swedish antiques. It was incredible, my favorite Veranda cover ever!

twombly's art is so powerful. i am an admirer of his work, having great respect for what he has accomplished as well as his aesthetic.

the calligraphic pieces shown fit so well in those rooms, it's as if the rooms were designed around the art, which is how it should be done, IMO..(that's me as an artist speaking!)

    I love his work.
On a side note, I posted awhile back a luncheon given to honor his series at the Tate, done at Petershams Nurseries.

Thanks for the intro to these artists :) Cy's work is wonderful, but I'm really drawn towards Bridgette's – art is truly subjective :)
