Imagining Life…

Inspired by this article, I began to think about how these days people are often having to consider what their “Plan B” in life might be. Layoffs and budget cuts typically leave their victims one of two ways- devastated and immobile or inspired to make change and see what else is out there for them beyond the expected. This article in Psychology Today was particularly interesting and I wanted to share it with you while I pondered what my “plan B” would be…. it’s kind of fun to think about, no? A little bit of an escape fantasy!

I think moving to a sunny, beachy island and running a B&B like India Hicks would be perfection…granted, that might take a little capital! Oh how charmed her life appears (and her home- yes, please)…

…or maybe moving to the quiet countryside here in New England and opening a sweet little bakery (like the folks at Heaven, which I posted about here.)

…or be a yoga teacher and live a more spritual life (and a fab Indian inspired home too…of course).

…or scrap everything and move to Paris, work in a boutique while writing and painting at the same time.

So what would your dream Plan B be???

Move to a country (like China) where the exchange rate is favorable and live like a Queen while running my own ice cream shop.

there is some MAJOR (say like victoria beckahm) prettiness going on in this post. love it. oh, and i would pool my benjamins with my best friends and open a breezy but beautiful coffee shop with comfy couches and great music. we'll call you (paris time of course) for playlist inspiration.

I LOVE this idea…Can I just scrap almost everything and move to Paris? I would take just one suitcase with my favorite things…and of course, my computer, so that I could blog, blog, blog about my fabulous new local…plan B sounds sooooo nice!

My plan B would be to move to a beach, a small bungalow would be perfect and teach Pilates.

mmmm a farm in the english countryside, where i can wear my hunter wellies and riding pants all day. did i mention this is with prince harry or rob pattinson?

  6. LindsB says:

I would love a combo of all of those ideas, they all sound like so much fun to do! But, if I had to pick just one plan I like India's idea.

What a delicious post – i just love it. As for moi, my realistic Plan B would be to move to Northern California, prob crash with my sister for awhile and spend some time figuring out what i want to do and eventually get a job in San Francisco.

In my dream world, i'd prob do what Mimi did and move to Paris and spend my days strolling, sipping cafe, and writing. :)

Plan B? That is what vacations are for. After a great time away, doesn't home seem like the perfect place to be?

I'm actually currently working on my plan B. It's quite exhilarating, exciting and scary taking the plunge!

My plan B has always been to rent jet skis in Mexico somewhere and live in a little shack on the beach. I could definitely see myself as a beach bum. :) Well, that or become an explorer like Lara Croft or Indiana Jones, although I think that might require a day job…

I'd move back to Paris in a heartbeat. I miss la vie Parisienne!

If that were a no-go I'd move near the water somewhere – maybe New England, maybe Florida, but probably the French Rivera or Monaco (Princess Grace, anyone?) – yes please!

You are so inspiring! This post was incredible & gorgeous all at the same time. I would be a lot of things…a world traveling photographer (if I could take pics), a singer & a vendor of hemp necklaces in Fiji.

  13. Kathryn says:

That's Shiva in "my" yoga studio! Sigh…

I LOVE this post! Genius! My plan B would be to move out of the city and live off the land. Which would be a total disaster, since I'm in no way outdoor-sy… But I like the romantic idea of it.

  15. Elements of Style says:

The Goods- I totally know what you mean! I always find the green/hippie lifestyle so romantic but am so high maintenance I think I would probably cry all day long. LOL.

I think I may be living someone else's Plan B (my Plan A, I guess)! I live on a small Caribbean island and work as an artist. Lovely, peaceful surroundings. The recession has definitely hit us here, though.

My Plan B would be move to a Mediterranean country, live in a small seaside town with enough amenities and plenty of culture, where people live rather balanced lives…somewhat lacking where I live. There'd be a large city not too far away. Sounds like I want to live in France, Italy or Spain!

Great post! And I'm enjoying reading all the comments.

What an awesome post! I love how the lifestyles and homes match :-) My Plan B seems to always involve moving to a more rural area… beyond that, not sure…maybe I'll pick the best style and match my life to go with it :-)

I like Belle On Heels' idea. Living in a sweet little farm cottage and making everything from scratch or home-grown sounds like a lovely plan. Of course I'd need a burly farmhand husband and several dogs.

  20. Mimi says:

I'd move to Italy (somewhere near the ocean) and open a flower shop.

    sigh.

Can I go to Plan B now?

Oooh, I would open a newstand or bookstore, cozy with a vintage look, w/ library ladders, worn and aged brass, and a bunch of overstuffed comfy chairs. Everything would be a little battered,a little worn, but would feel oh so comforting, with nice ambiance for reading. Of course I would serve complimentary coffee and tea, and have a carafe of room temp Voss Water avail at all times. I may even have a wonderful sleepy cat or dog roaming about, because of course I would live above the storefront in an apartment. I just love the smell of old books. Oh and there would be an endless supply of decor magazines from around the world, but everything, just like me would be a little disheveled, but charming nonetheless. Fun Post!

  22. Renae says:

I think it would be fun to hop on my bike and travel Europe working in little villages along the way. I would have to equip it with paniers to carry limited clothing!
    Good thought…

  23. Paula Grace Halewski says:

I like the way you think… I am going to Disney World next week… maybe I'll eat myself silly all through Epcot and then decide which county has the best food. That's where my Plan B will start. Of course I would have to take my trainer with me to keep me in shape.

Im in the middle of Plan B after getiing let go. The working capital of your India Hicks dream is of every dream & the banks right now are not so much into dreams so I wait & work & when it comes down to things, Plan C is even better. Selling my book of poetry & opening a B&B in the Bershires or Hudson River Valley with a small veggiefarm attatched.

It's fun to dream. And what a fun post, really offers a mini escape.

Our plan B would be finding a farmhouse in the English countryside. Sheep, goats, fresh eggs from hens and fab sweaters and wellies for chilly damp weather. Husband and I stayed awake lying in bed talking about the possibility just the other night. But oops, no need for American commercial developers over there. So it's here in the states for us.

    At least for now…

Some fabulous options! I have absolutely no idea what my plan B would be – your B & B plan sounds really good, though :)

What a great post….it really got me dreaming. My plan B would include an international move of some sort!
