With wedding season fast approaching I know that a lot of you have multiple celebrations to attend this summer and are stressing about what to wear and how much it’s going to cost to get dolled up differently for each one! Here is a thought for you, along the lines of my “Buy less, but better” mantra for this year- buy one beautifully made simple dress, like this Alexander McQueen strapless bustier dress, and accessorize it in various ways with less expensive accessories to get different looks from the same tried and true basic that will last forever!

the dress is perfect. i really love black and blue together – i think it’s so fresh. but, those nine west shoes are over the top grand!!
Very cute! I just went and bought a new dress and skirt for a couple of the weddings we are going to this summer. Unfortunately I don’t think I can re-vamp my dress this many times. But I will certainly try!
What a lovely post Erin. Very practical. I’ve actually had a black dress just like that for years. Thanks for the new ideas!
Oh well done!!
Love your site. But black!? At a wedding!? Here in the deep south there would be only one reaction. Clutch the pearls!
Wonderful combinations!
Love the gold shoes in both posts!
As I have 3 weddings to go to this summ/fall (Aug, Sept, Oct…oh my), you are an absolute angel to post this!!
And I love black dresses for any occasion. Even if the bridesmaids wear them! So classic and timeless.
Really nice post Erin! The dress is stunningly simple and perfect, I love it. I really like the concept of using accessories to reinvent an ensemble around 1 perfect piece. Thanks for the great ideas!
I actually think black is fine for a wedding- what do you guys think?? Didn’t even cross my mind!
I think wearing black depends on the setting and style of the individual wedding. I have no issue with it if it’s an evening/black-tie/sophisticated soire. Typically I never wear black to garden/island/summery/daytime weddings because it doesn’t seem to fit the vibe and I feel out of place. Just my two cents though!
I think that black is fine for a wedding as long as there are fun accessories! Every girl feels comfortable in a classic LBD, especially if there is yummy food and cocktails involved!
Ah! I love this! And I would totally wear black to a wedding, especially with all the fun accessories!
Love this Erin! Thanks for the great ideas!
Really like the first look. What a great blue!
PRETTY! I like each ensemble, but I think no. 02 is my favorite~
I love a little black dress for nearly any occasion – and there is a mix of color with it, so I think it’s a timeless and chic option. Rule of thumb perhaps: what would Audrey do?
Oh my goodness – I love all three looks so much, I’m not sure I’d be able to choose… good thing I’ve got three weddings on the horizon!
After 13 years living in Manhattan I can honestly say the only time I’m against black is to your child’s/Godchild’s Christening or to YOUR OWN wedding – otherwise black is all good – especially when you add great pops of color like you did.
LOVE the second look!
Hi Erin,
Not sure where to post this, but I would love a Fashion Friday post on men’s shoes for summer… never quite sure what is stylish in this area- my new man’s shoes are hideous, but not sure what to recommend- thanks!
Great looks – I really love the third one :)
