As I’ve said many a time before- as a designer I find it impossible to decide on items for my own home. I can pick things for other people all day long (and do) but am not as good at doing it for myself. So help me out, my dear readers and vote for which tripod lamp you like best (I’ve got a v. exciting photo shoot soon and am in full on re-decorating mode!)
Pottery Barn’s Ashland floor lamp with it’s sleek wooden legs and antique nickel detail- a modern shape with traditional materials.
Or the modern CB2 Twine floor lamp. Sleeker and lighter adding a different feel…
Oh, and it’s going on the corner where the lamp on the little makeshift table lives right now…

the top one is my vote.
My vote is for the PB lamp. It seems warmer and would fit well in your space. The other is a little ‘cold’. It’s nice too, but…. I like the wood legs. Good luck!! Can’t wait to see your design changes….
I vote pottery barn. The wood adds warmth and it seems like the metal one would just wash out and look out of place.
Pottery Barn Lamp, definitely
I like the pottery barn lamp as well. It seems to really go with the flow of you room.
PB.
I must know, where is your tv in this room? The hidden wall?
Just to throw a mix in, I saw the one in the CB2 catalog this week and said to myself, that’s just perfect, maybe the kids will break the floor lamp in the living room soon. I think its the way for you to go too.
Congrats on the mention in the NYTimes!
I vote for the PB lamp. I like the mix of wood and metal.
pottery barn. touch of metal to compliment the mirror over fireplace, but warm and substantial to anchor corner.
Ooops make that the mention in that Washington Post. :)
Oh I’m intrigued. I can’t wait to find out what the photo shoot is for. So exciting.
I agree with everyone else. I think pick 1 would look best in your room.
I agree with the others that the PB one would go best in your room. However, if you wanted to go for the unexpected the silver one would rock too. Gosh, I am no help!
PB one for sure. It would provide a nice warmth in the corner.
I like both, but I think the Pottery Barn one is my favourite for your space. Like others mentionned, it’s the warmth that makes it seem more suitable.
One of the things I don’t like as much about the CB2 lamp is the way the cord dangles right through the middle of the sleek legs. What is the cord like on the PB lamp in real life?
I like the Pottery Barn lamp. I think that it would stand out more against the light curtains. Love your living room by the way.
I vote for the PB one, too.
PB lamp…I think it goes with the natural element of the table (with its wooden legs).
Pottery Barn, all the way! Beautiful room…
I agree with the masses – PB. I think the CB2 on looks a bit cheaper and I don’t like the mix of the metal mirror over the fireplace with that CB2 lamp. That’s my 2 cents!
Lindsay- my TV is on the wall to the left, facing the fireplace. It’s not ideal, but I did not want it above the fireplace as it would have been way too prominent for my liking!
I totally vote for the PB lamp…I like the mix of the wood, silver and linen (shade)which adds to the dimensionality of the piece itself, which I think in turn, would add greater character to your room. I agree, if it was for me, I wouldn’t be able to figure it out either…which is totally why I need you! :)
I love the Pottery Barn lamp. I like the warmth of the wood, and think it would look great in your space!
The PB lamp it is, by overwhelming majority! I was leaning that way as well- but needed some confirmation! Thank you guys!:)
Don’t forget Rachel Simon’s tripod floor lamp! Maybe the Red Mumm to pick up the orange pillows?
A suggestion from your friends at the LAMPS PLUS LightPost blog!
And maybe it’s just me, but the image on the PB website actually resembles your living room. Same colors.

It’s a sign!
Pb lamp & I LOVE your living room!!!
My vote is for the PB lamp, or try the Jonathan Adler Ventana floor lamp, which is fabulous but comes with a not-so-fabulous price tag to match! http://www.jonathanadler.com/shop/product.php?productid=17300&cat=386&page=1
my vote is for the wooden one.
i have a question too: what would your advice be for curtains for a living room that has two ‘single’ size windows (much like the two on either side of your fireplace) along the same wall behind a couch? Can you hang two separate sets of curtains on short, separate rods when there is only about 3 or 4 feet separting the windows? i have a similar issue in the dining room where there is only about 2 feets between the windows….or better to stick with shades and and avoid the issue completely?
thanks!
I think I would actually got with the CB2 lamp simply because it’s more of a contrast with your existing decor but still not incongruous — it would compliment your starburst mirror over the fireplace nicely.
I prefer the Pottery Barn one. The wood ties it into the room very nicely. LOVE your blog!
I think the Pottery Barn lamp would make much more of a statement, especially showing off that particular tripod style. The CB2 lamp would (I believe) blend into the background…it’s main focus would be a light source IMO. I don’t like the dangly cord either…so PB for sure :o)
i love the first one. it would look quite lovely in that room of yours.
PB lamp. Clearly.
PB (top) lamp. The wood legs would stand out more against your pale walls (but not too much) and the combination of the shade/wood/silver ties in the table/mirror/upholstery/wall, I think.
I definitely prefer the PB lamp for your space!
the wood one is warmer, and will pop in just the right way!
the other one, although lovely, seems too cold.
love your blog!! check it every day without fail.
thanks for always sharing your knowledge.
I think the PB one. The CB2 one is like you would be trying to be too matchy matchy with your starburst mirror.
Yup, a vote for PB too – for the reasons already stated: while I personally love the sparkle of the CB2 version, it doesn’t fit the warm vibe you’ve got going on in your room right now.
Hi Erin!
PB looks the best..my first instinct. I’m sure it will look fab!
I throw in my vote for the PB lamp. The chrome legs don’t go with the honey tones of much of your furniture, and I’m not sure they’ll be able to anchor that corner. The PB lamp looks sturdier and more in harmony with your color palette…
The PB one
between these two I definitely prefer the Ashland.
I’m a little late in the game but I really like the PB lamp too. I have a question about your curtains. How do you accommodate different sizes of windows when you use ready made curtains? I have one large window with three separate divided light sections and one small window similar to what you have. Do you double up with two standard size curtains on each side for the big window? Your curtains look so great, I would really appreciate any advice you might be able to provide. I really can’t afford custom!
Pottery Barn, most definately! Love the site, too!
PB lamp gets my vote.
Your living room looks great.
I love your orange pillows- I was wondering if you bought them or had them made? If store-bought would you mind sharing where they are from? Thanks!
Have you considered this beauty?

Another vote for the PB lamp here.
It’s too bad that stunning and unusual base will be so hidden and not more prominently visible in the room, though, but it’s still definitely the better of the two options.
